Not quite sure what the coquette aesthetic *actually* is? Don't worry, you're not alone. Sure, I'd heard the term thrown around the Cosmo fashion desk, but with so many emerging and whimsical trends (plus microtrends) around this year already, I'm not ashamed to admit I'm struggling to keep up. I only heard about grandmillenial style literally yesterday. If you're in the same boat, I've done the hard work (read: research) for you, so let me explain.
Puff sleeves, ruffles galore, and a colour palette consisting of pastel pink, baby blue, and every shade of white forms the basis of the coquette aesthetic. All accessorised with a lace edge, added frill, embroidery, embellishment, and lots and lots (and lots!) of ribbon tied into pretty bows. This hyperfeminine look emphasises romanticisim and borrows from both regencycore – think Bridgerton and the upcoming Netflix spin-off, Queen Charlotte – and balletcore, even referencing corsage motifs that have been subtly taking over on red carpets this award's season.
Still confused? Well, Billie Eilish just posted Instagram pics wearing a 'fit that perfectly nails the coquette aesthetic. Check it out:
Billie's dress is perfect for spring, and style expert and TV star Tan France even took to the comments, simply writing "gorge". We definitely agree with Tan's verdict, it's a great look and super on-trend, too.
Wearing a white off-the-shoulder midi dress covered in a blue floral chintz print, the gathered bodice and ruffled hem further add to the garment's romantic feel. But Billie's choice to pair the dress with lace tights embellished with tiny pearls in a heart shape on each leg is peak coquette vibes. Even her exposed pink bra straps and pale yellow socks decorated with flowers add a girly touch. Gold and pearl jewellery, including the Missoma x Harris Reed Star Catcher pendant necklace, provided the finishing details.
We have TikTok, as per, to thank for this latest mood. But the SS23 runways aren't completely guilt-free. Simone Rocha and Cecilie Bahnsen have long been championing overt femininity, and this season's collections are no exception. Similarly, Acne Studios didn't miss an opportunity to add a bow or ribbon to anything and everything – even one model's nipples.
If the coquette aesthetic sounds like something you want to dip your toe into, or jump in head first, we've rounded up the best pieces on the high street for you to shop now.
