You might think that after wearing that now-infamous "I Really Don't Care, Do U?" coat while immigrant children were being detained, Melania Trump would be paying closer attention to her fashion choices and the messages that they send. However, you would be wrong.
The first lady was recently on a solo trip to Africa, giving out blankets and hugging children. While touring Nairobi National Park in Kenya, she thought it would be a good idea to accessorise one of her outfits with a hat. And not just any hat—a white, colonial-era pith helmet that harkens back to a time when Africans were relentlessly exploited by Westerners.
According to The Guardian, pith helmets are a symbol of "oppression," and "Soldiers, guides and wildlife specialists replaced the pith helmet long ago with more practical and less controversial headgear, but they are still in ceremonial use in a handful of countries – and by tourists in Africa who have limited experience of local conditions and sensibilities." Yikes!
Also, a reminder that President Trump's policies loosen regulations on trophy hunting and importing animal parts, so Melania's wildlife tour was a little controversial in the first place, and her fashion statement is just adding insult to injury at this point.
