Oh! What's occurring? The bloody last ever episode of Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, that's what! We are so unbelievably excited to see what happens with our Essex and Barry faves this Christmas Day, tying their stories up in a lovely festive bow. But what actually happened in the last episode of Gavin & Stacey, again? The previous Christmas Special came out in 2019, so consider this your recap of how things were left last time around.

As the BBC description reads, "The families get together once again for Christmas. Bryn is cooking dinner, Dawn is in shock, and there are revelations in the pub on Christmas Eve." So, what actually unfolded in the hour-long episode? Well...
Smithy had a girlfriend called Sonia - who drove off on Christmas Day
After Smithy told Gavin he needed to ask him to "step into Christmas" (iconic), the plumber not only revealed that he had a girlfriend, but that he was going to propose to her on Boxing Day. Her name was Sonia, and she joined the gang down in Barry on Christmas Day to celebrate.
Only, er, Gavin and Nessa were disappointed to see Smithy wasn't being himself around her, and also that she made comments about his weight. Sonia was obviously uncomfortable with the whole thing, and decided to drive back to her parents - leaving Smithy alone.
Gavin and Stacey have three children and live in Barry
During the episode, it was revealed that Gavin and Stacey are happily married (although they are slightly missing a spark - hence why Stacey takes Gavin on a tour of all their memorable places in Barry) and have three children, and they all live in Barry.
Neil the baby, meanwhile, also lives in Barry with Nessa at Uncle Bryn's house, and is old enough to be at school. Bryn, Jason, Gwen, Pam and Mick all spend every Christmas together, alternating between Barry and Essex.
Bryn almost told us what happened on the fishing trip
One of the most memorable moments from the last episode of Gavin & Stacey focussed on Uncle Bryn and Stacey's brother Jason, after it was *almost* revealed what went down on their infamous fishing trip.
For their Christmas presents that year, Gwen had gifted them all photographs she had found loose in an album - with theirs taken from the weekend away. But just as Bryn was about to share the story, Sonia arrived. Eek.
Dawn and Peter were being chaotic as usual
Pam and Mick's Christmas Eve was interrupted by their best friends Dawn and Peter, when Dawn arrived in hysterics, accusing Peter of being a drug addict. What had really happened was his work colleagues had given him a spliff in the secret Santa, as a joke, and she had found it in his car. The foursome then proceeded to smoke the spliff and dance around the Christmas tree.
Nessa proposed to Smithy
After a drunken night at the pub, Nessa and Smithy spent the night together on Christmas Eve, leaving him feeling awkward about his relationship with Sonia. After she decided to leave the family party and drive back to her parents, she left Nessa and Smithy outside Gavin and Stacey's house. It's here that Nessa shared her love for Smithy, taking off one of her rings, getting down on one knee and proposing.
The screen then faded to black, leaving viewers on the ultimate cliffhanger: Did Smithy say yes? WE NEED TO KNOW.
