Britney Spears and her husband of just over a year, Sam Asghari, are getting a divorce, with both of them taking to Instagram to confirm the news.
On Wednesday 16th August, TMZ broke the news, with reports that the apparent breakup was due to an argument about infidelity. The outlet reported that Sam, 29, had confronted Britney, 41, after rumours began circulating that she had been unfaithful. However, while the allegations triggered a "huge fight" between the pair, TMZ has been unable to confirm if the cheating accusation "has any basis in fact."
A source did tell the publication that Sam has since moved out of their marital home, and is now living independently in a place of his own. They also added that it's likely the couple will legally finalise the split, sharing: "It’s only a matter of time before Sam files for divorce."
Then, on Friday 18th August, Sam took to Instagram Stories to confirm they were separating. In a text post, he wrote, "After six years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always. Shit happens. Asking for privacy seems ridiculous so I will just ask for everyone including the media to be kind and thoughtful."
Following Sam's statement, Britney took to Instagram to address the split today (19th August), saying she was "shocked" about the breakup.
"As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together … 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but …," she said. "I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business !!! But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly !!!"
Britney went onto thank people for their messages of support, saying: "In some sort of telepathic way I have been receiving so many messages that melt my heart from friends and I thank you !!!"
The split rumours and alleged infidelity row come just over two months after Britney and Sam celebrated their one-year anniversary. The pair exchanged vows on 9 June 2022 in a star-studded LA ceremony but had been linked since 2016 after they met on the set of the singer's Slumber Party music video. Sam popped the question in 2021 inside the former couple's home and presented Britney with a ring he had designed himself, with the help of a jeweller.
