The layered bob and the fringe haircut have been around forever; timeless, if you will. Pair them together, however, and you've got yourself a fresh style that's effortlessly cool, endlessly versatile and super flattering thanks to its face-framing shape. Three for the price of one!
But for those who haven't yet tried the cuts together and are questioning whether or not it's best suited to you, we spoke to award-winning hairstylist and Cosmopolitan Contributing Expert Jordanna Cobella, who shared her top tips on how to make the layered bob with fringe work for you. From soft, curtain-like bangs and chin-length layers to choppy micro-fringes and textured ends, here are 13 of the best takes on the trend, plus how to style and maintain your 'do.
What is a layered bob with fringe?
Before getting to variations of the fringe, let's address the layered bob. Breaking it down, Jordanna says, "A layered bob is essentially a bob with some textured layers, which can relieve texture, release curls, and add volume and width to its shape."
One haircut that the layered bob sometimes gets confused with is the choppy bob. Explaining, Jordanna says, "A choppy bob normally means a bob with a shattered edge (only the very ends are layered) rather than the haircut itself, but the terms can be used interchangeably."
Now that we've got the lengths nailed down, let's confront the fringe! Fringes work well with layered bobs because they balance the face shape while adding softness and dimension to the haircut. The layers create movement and volume, and the fringe draws attention to the eyes, framing the face in a flattering way. "There are no restrictions when it comes to fringe types that work with layered bobs; Micro fringe, rounded, grown-out bottleneck bangs and Bardot bangs are all suitable options," Jordanna adds.
Who is best suited to the layered bob and fringe hairstyle?
If you have natural texture in your hair, this combination cut will work perfectly for you. "The layers in the bob add volume and width and release the curls so it can be worn in its widest silhouette," Jordanna says.

However, if you have super straight or fine hair, Jordanna advises avoiding this cut; "It can take away from the thickness of the edge of your haircut and sometimes lines can appear if your hair is super straight and over-layered," she says.
As for face shapes and the layered bob with fringe, Jordanna tells us that there are several points to swot up on. Those with oval faces are in luck because this shape suits all bob styles, whether blunt or layered. Heart-shaped faces benefit from a bob that balances a wider forehead by adding weight around the jaw – aka, a chin-length cut or lob. For square faces, a blunt or layered bob with curved styling or a side part helps soften strong angles. Meanwhile, round faces look best with bobs that fall below the chin to elongate the face; mid-cheek lengths are best avoided.
Noted!
Is a layered bob and fringe high-maintenance?
The built-in shape of layers in a layered bob can add natural movement and volume, making it easier to achieve a styled look with minimal effort. However (!!), depending on your hair type and the specific cut, some styling may still be needed to prevent the layers from looking uneven or flat. Wavy or textured hair may air-dry with ease, while straight or fine hair may need a quick blow-dry or styling product to enhance the layers.
Paired with a fringe – blunt, curtain or wispy, for example – this haircut can be somewhat high-maintenance. Bangs often require regular trims to keep their shape and may need daily styling to sit properly. So, before you commit, be prepared!
