From the jellyfish haircut to the wolf cut, it seems like every animal is getting its moment in the salon spotlight. But our favourite creature-inspired style? The 'butterfly bob'! With its light, airy layers and flattering shape, this cut combines the bounce of a bob with the soft movement of butterfly wings, making it as versatile as it is stylish.
Could this be your next experimental hairstyle? Well, with expert insight from professional hairstylist Danielle Garner, we've got the full lowdown on what exactly the butterfly bob is, who it suits, and how to style it. So, whether you're after a fresh chop or just want to stay on-trend without sacrificing wearability, this one's worth a flutter...
What is a butterfly bob?
The butterfly bob is inspired by the longer butterfly haircut – a style that went viral on TikTok in recent years. As hairstylist Danielle Garner describes, "the butterfly haircut is a layered, voluminous cut designed to give the illusion of shorter hair while keeping length." This original version keeps more length overall, whereas the butterfly bob in question brings that same layered volume into a shorter, more manageable shape.
Continuing, Danielle says that "The butterfly bob is a layered bob that mimics the soft, wing-like movement of a butterfly." This means the cut is designed to feel light and airy, with layers that create soft, natural movement – much like a butterfly's fluttering wings.
Danielle explains that the look "typically includes: shorter, face-framing layers (curtain bangs or a soft fringe), longer, tapered layers through the back to build shape and volume, and a light, wispy finish, avoiding a blunt, heavy edge." These elements work together to create a sculpted silhouette with plenty of texture and body, while avoiding the harsh lines of a traditional blunt bob. "Think of it as a sculpted, shapely bob that looks full and bouncy while keeping the base length short," she adds.
So, in other words, the butterfly bob offers the drama and volume of a fuller style without losing the clean structure of a classic bob.

Which works for you: the longer butterfly cut or bob?
When asked whether the butterfly-inspired cut works across different hair lengths, Danielle says, "Short hair (bob to lob) works great with a butterfly cut for lift and structure.” For longer styles, Garner explains, "Medium to long hair works perfectly for the original butterfly cut with cascading layers." Whereas on mid-length to long hair, the full version of the butterfly cut comes to life, with flowing layers that give movement while preserving overall length.
However, when it comes to very short hair (like a pixie or crop), the butterfly cut may not work. "There isn't enough length to build the shape," Danielle says. Cropped styles simply don’t offer the length needed to create the signature layering that defines the butterfly haircut.
Will the butterfly bob suit your face shape and hair type?
When it comes to face shape, Danielle notes that "Oval and heart faces work well with the layers to beautifully accentuate cheekbones and jawlines." These face shapes naturally work well with the contouring effect of layered cuts, which draw attention to bone structure.
For rounder faces, she advises a strategic approach: "Round: Works best with longer, tapered face layers (ultra-short layers can widen)." In this case, longer layers help elongate and balance the face, while short face-framing pieces could have the opposite effect by emphasising roundness. So, when it comes to the butterfly cut, you're going to want to opt for a lob or longer.
For those with strong square jawlines, "Opt for soft, wispy layers for balance." The goal here is to soften and add movement to offset angular features.
Hair type is another key factor to note when it comes to deciding whether the butterfly bob will suit you. Danielle says, "Fine to medium hair types are ideal for this cut as the layers add lift and movement."
For curlier hair types, "layering can avoid bulk and boxiness," Danielle says. Curly hair needs precision layering to keep the shape light and flattering without creating unwanted volume in the wrong places. She adds, "Very thick or coarse may need internal weight removal for a light, airy silhouette." In other words, thicker hair can be made to work with this cut, but it often requires texturising or thinning techniques to avoid a heavy, blocky look.
Finally, for those with very fine strands, Danielle offers a word of caution: "This cut can skew too wispy – use volumising products and consistent styling." In this case, supportive styling products and maintenance are key to making sure the delicate layers don't fall flat or appear too sparse.
How to style and maintain the butterfly bob
You'll be pleased to hear that Danielle says that the butterfly bob is versatile and can be styled in many effortless ways. "It's ideal for a bouncy blow-dry or can be worn naturally textured," she says. So, whether styled sleek or left to air dry, the cut is meant to look effortless and full of life.
Danielle breaks down four butterfly bob styling looks below:
Bouncy volume blow-dry
1) Apply volumising mousse at roots + lengths; blow-dry with a round brush, lifting at the crown and curling layers away from the face.
2) Finish with dry texture spray for airy movement.
Soft waves
1) Create loose bends with a large-barrel tong or flat iron, alternating directions.
2) Rake through with fingers; mist sea salt or texture spray.
Sleek and shaped
1) Smooth-blow-dry or flat-iron; bevel ends slightly inward/outward to keep the cut’s shape.
2) Finish with a light serum or cream for polish.
Air-dried texture
1) Apply leave-in/curl cream; scrunch and air-dry or diffuse.
2) Lightly pick the crown for lift and define face pieces with a bit of cream or gel.
When it comes to maintenance, Danielle, unfortunately, says that the butterfly bob can be moderate to high, depending on your texture and goals. "It may need a trim every 6–8 weeks to maintain the layered shape as well as styling support (volumising mousse, heat protectant, round brush, texture spray) to keep that lifted, floaty finish."
So, do expect 5–15 minutes of styling on most days for the best effect.
