When I tried to explain exactly what an 'everything shower' is to my 70-year-old mum, she was perplexed (as she is with many viral trends, to be honest). "Oh, so a long shower?" she questioned. Yes, but it's not so much the length, it's more the amount of things you do when in and around it, which is, ahem, everything. You can have a long shower where you just wash but you really stretch it out so you can sing at least a third of the Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording) while you're in there – speaking from experience. No, an 'everything shower' requires multiple steps all of which are perfectly timed so you can maximise the amount of hair, skin and body maintenance you can do.

People have been having these kinds of full-on showers forever, but of course, recently it's gotten the TikTok treatment of a cutesy name for us to use. Beyond what it's coined though, these showers can be a real self-care moment. If you have the time (which is already a luxury) indulging in this weekly can feel like it sets you up for a good week or picks you up after a bad one. As an Afro-haired girl who only does a weekly wash day, I incorporate all beauty from top to toe in my regimen and step out of it feeling like a new woman.

What is the best 'everything shower' order?

Everyone has a different preference and does different steps for their everything shower but in general, you should try and organise it so you are rinsing all products off at the end. So, for instance, if you incorporate a hair wash and body exfoliation into yours, it's a good idea to start with your hair wash and condition, apply a hair mask, tie up and allow to soak in. While that's cooking, that's when you exfoliate top to toe and then you rinse out the mask and rinse off the scrub at the end. Think of your rinse at the end to be the final flourish, the big crescendo of your shower.

Best products for an 'everything shower'

It can be a bit overwhelming knowing where to begin because while someone like me likes to go all in with my 'everything shower' routine, others might prefer a more focused approach to one aspect of their beauty routine. For example, if you want to really hone in on your hair for your 'everything shower', your routine will start before you step in with a scalp oil or serum, or pre-wash treatment. It'll then consist of a scalp scrub and a double cleanse before slavering on a hair mask. That's when you do your body routine. If you were focusing on body routine though you would start with a body brush, then in the shower focus on cleansing, perhaps incorporating a shower oil into the mix. While the oil softens your skin you can do a basic shampoo and condition before rinsing everything off. Got it?
