11 best fake tans for a rich, believable bronze in 2026 – tried and tested
From the hundreds of formulas out there, these are the best bottles that deliver that just-stepped-off-a-flight glow
When it comes to finding the best bottle of fake than, there are a whole bunch of things to consider. Firstly the shade; do you want a light glow or a deep bronze? Then there's the formula; are you a fast-drying mousse fan, or do you prefer a nourishing lotion?
There are a lot of options out there, so as a fake-tan obsessive myself, I have been busy bronzing my limbs (along with the rest of the Cosmo beauty team) in the name of research, to bring you the best fake tans to shop in 2026.
Yep, don't worry about catching any rays this summer because I’m here to help you fake it... (but if you do plan a spot of sun tanning, make sure you load up on the best sunscreen to protect your skin).
Best fake tan formulas for every preference, at a glance
Before we get into the best bottles to shop, Isle of Paradise founder, Jules Von Hep is here to share his tips on making the best out of your glow – even if it is fake.
How do you apply fake tan?
“The trick to a truly flawless glow is all in the prep,” says Jules. “Remove hair (should you wish to) and exfoliate at least 24 hours before tanning. This means your skin will have a smooth surface for application but more importantly, it will fade evenly like a natural tan would,” he adds.
The next step is to moisturise! Before application, apply a thin layer to dry areas where tan is most likely to cling, such as your elbows, knees, hands and the tops of your feet.
Now, onto the actual application. Pump the formula onto a tanning mitt – this will ensure an even layer and prevent your palms from turning orange – and gently use circular motions to massage in. Start at your legs, applying one pump at a time, and work your way up. At the end, take what is remaining on the mitt and gently buff into your hands and feet.
Should you moisturise after you fake tan?
"One of the best ways to prolong your tan is to keep hydrated! Drink water and moisturise your skin every day using an aloe vera-based body lotion or butter. Hydrated skin won’t shed tan and will hold onto the colour for longer," says Jules.
How do you remove fake tan?
TBH, most people just wait until the tan has faded naturally – myself included. But if you want to remove beforehand, “slowly but surely tease tan off the skin over the course of three days, with the last day being a deep scrub,” says Jules. “Mix a spoonful of sugar in with your body wash, each time you wash a light layer of tan will come off giving a slow, gradual but even fade.”
So, whether you're looking for the best gradual tanner, an instant fake tan that won't go streaky, or, a long-lasting self-tan that promises zero patchiness – these are the 10 highest-rated body bronzers out there.
