While it’s not too surprising that the Euphoria series finale got metaphorical and bent reality a bit, it does merit a quick recap into what and and did not happen. Spoilers ahead for Euphoria season 3! Yes, we’re going to talk about who dies...
How does Rue escape from Laurie and her crew?
At the beginning of the episode, Alamo’s guy G helps Rue get away with Laurie’s safe. Meanwhile, Bishop and Big Eddy pull a switcheroo with some ambulances and drive off with a shipment of fentanyl.
This makes things complicated when Laurie’s ranch gets raided by the DEA. Faye and Wayne successfully make a run for it, even though Rue injured them during her own escape. Laurie, on the other hand, dies by suicide to avoid arrest. But since Alamo how has the drugs, there’s nothing there. Ah, the irony!
When exactly does Rue die in the Euphoria finale?
The episode employs a few moments of magical realism that, if you’re not paying close attention, muddles the timeline a bit. We see Rue wake up at Ali’s house and have a few conversations with him over cereal. We see her learn that Fez escaped from prison (using parkour like he planned), go to find him, and break into her childhood home on the way there. However, none of that happened. In actuality, Rue took the Percocet that Alamo gave her and experienced a fatal overdose on Ali’s couch. He finds her there, non-responsive, the next morning.
Wait, so did Fezco actually escape from prison?
I do not think so, sadly.
What does Ali do after he finds Rue’s body?
Ali tests the drugs to prove that they were either secretly laced with fentanyl–or just fentanyl pills in a Percocet bottle. It’s pretty clear that Alamo did this intentionally, because Maddy let slip that Rue was working with the DEA.
Months later, Ali goes to what he says his his final recovery meeting, murders Alamo at his strip club, and goes to visit the religious family that Rue met at the beginning of the season. G and Alamo die in the shootout. When Ali gets to the farm in Texas, he introduces himself as Martin McQueen, the name he had before converting to Islam. It’s a roller coaster sequence of events, but at the end of it he leads a prayer and sees a peaceful vision of Rue. “May God bless us all," she says.
What happens to Cassie and Lexi?
Cassie transforms her and Nate’s house into a boarding house, basically, for influencers and content creators. She and Maddy invite her sister to join. While Lexi turns her down, the sisters have a nice (and long) moment ruminating over Rue’s fate, their dad, and the Bible. The one thing they don’t talk about, however, is Nate. Lexi does not know he’s dead! She just thinks he left her sister. Woof.
Does Maddy make it out of her criminal subplot alive?
Of all the characters who found or put themselves in increasingly dangerous situations on Euphoria in the final season, Maddy is one of the few who survived–literally! Sure, Alamo held her hostage at gunpoint while Ali was shooting up the Silver Slipper strip club. Sure, he also threatened her with marriage... random and scary. But then he died, freeing her. She hitched a ride with Bishop outta there.
Was Jules even in the final episode?
Totally. She painted a portrait of Rue in tribute. Didn’t you catch that part?
