Nearly 20 years after Britney Spears’ iconic Onyx Hotel Tour, one of her backup dancers, Teresa Espinosa, has given fans a glimpse into the whirlwind era of her career. The revelation comes after Britney’s ex, Kevin Federline, alleged that she had cheated on him with Teresa, who is now saying her piece.
In a lengthy Instagram caption posted on Thursday, October 16, Teresa shared what it was like to work alongside Britney in the thick of her In the Zone album cycle, which spawned hits like “Toxic” and “Me Against the Music” featuring Madonna.
“At the time (2003 to 2004), I felt the chaotic energy that was Britney’s life just by being in proximity to her,” Teresa wrote, in part, alongside some behind-the-scenes photos and videos. “Paparazzi were in full effect everywhere she went. She couldn’t breathe or sneeze without someone trying to capture a moment of her beautiful soul.”
The dancer, who was asked to choreograph Britney’s music video for “Outrageous” before it was canceled due to a knee injury, expressed that the pop icon likely felt “lost” and craved a sense of normalcy at that point in her career. She reflected on a time she invited Britney to a club with friends, where she ultimately introduced her to K-Fed.
“We were frantically chased by paparazzi the whole way to the club. The drive was dangerous and super crazy, with them boxing us in on all sides of my car while desperately trying to get a picture of her,” she wrote, later adding, “I’m not exactly sure how that innocent introduction [to Kevin] turned into more than just a simple hang, and that’s not my story to tell.”
Teresa’s insight comes after an excerpt from Kevin’s upcoming tell-all, You Thought You Knew, was published by USA Today on October 15. In it, he claims he caught Britney and Teresa “full-on making out” in their Amsterdam hotel room during a night out.
“It was one of those loose, carefree evenings where everyone was dancing, drinking and just having a good time. We stayed out late, hitting one of the city’s nightclubs until at least 1 or 2 in the morning,” Kevin wrote in the excerpt.
When they got back to their hotel, he revealed that the Grammy winner told him she’d be right back, only to find out that she was with Teresa in another room.
“As I passed one of the rooms, I glanced inside–and froze,” he recalled. “There she was. [Teresa] was sitting on the edge of the bed. Britney stood between her legs, hands on her face, and they were fucking going at it. Full-on making out.”
Teresa didn’t expand on the moment in her October 16 post, but she did give the “Oops! …I Did It Again” singer her flowers while thanking her for the opportunity to make it as a professional dancer. “NO ONE will EVER know what it’s been like to walk second in her shoes,” she closed her message.
