Some may see the changing of the seasons as a major wardrobe challenge, but there's a lot of sartorial fun to be had in the transition from summer to autumn. That in-between stage allows for light layering (love!), and those not-quite-high-summer items that suffered under the UK's new heatwave-hun status, like a three-quarter-sleeve top or thicker-denim Bermuda shorts, can finally come into their own.
While I'm not ready yet to throw in the towel and dive back into cable-knit jumpers or commit to carrying a ‘just in case’ lightweight jacket, now that the weather has cooled down a bit and we face our usual tepid temps, a thin knit cardigan is a must. In particular, I'm currently eyeing up short-sleeve cardigans.
The short-sleeve iteration is having a bit of a moment. They bring an effortless ease to transitional dressing, giving just the right amount of insulation needed for late summer whilst also offering highly versatile styling opps. You can wear a short-sleeve cardigan in the way you would a basic white T-shirt, with a billowing maxi skirt for boho vibes or a pair of slouchy jeans for off-duty cool.
As we move into autumn, layered over a simple cotton tank top, half-unbuttoned and paired with lots of chain necklaces, is a fun, fresh look that'll serve as an everyday uniform right through September. Treating the cardigan like a lil' cropped jacket works well, as the short-sleeve length creates a boxy structural silhouette. Or, if it's more of a cap sleeve style, wear it buttoned up to the top for lots of preppy cuteness.
Vintage fans will be keen to note that the style was first introduced in the 1930s. By the 1950s, it was a mainstream hit beloved by style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly – which explains the item's retro-chic, preppy aesthetic. For tips on how to adapt this summer knit into your autumnal wardrobe, whether you're embracing its ultra-feminine origins or want a more boyish, boxy look, Gigi Hadid's knitwear brand Guest in Residence is a constant source of inspiration. They give masterclasses in how to layer knitwear.
One style that's caught my attention this week is M&S' relaxed short-sleeve cardigan.
The whole Cosmopolitan UK office was swooning over this piece. It's crafted from air yarn, which, according to Marks & Sparks, is an innovative fabric that's lighter than traditional knits, making it the perfect transitional buy. Plus, in the most delicious red-brown shade, it's ideal for the upcoming season.
