When it comes to this summer's colour trends, cobalt blue has largely dominated sartorial conversations. However, over the past few weeks, we've noticed another colourway quietly gaining attention – green. Following on from pale matcha that had a brief moment in the sun (literally) back in the spring, summer's new favourite hue is a punchy, vivid green that we've dubbed ‘lawn green’.
Blame it on the fact we've got Wimbledon on the brain, with the annual tennis tournament coming to a close yesterday, Sunday 12 July, but the specific shade of green we're talking about is the exact colour of the Centre Court grass. Admittedly, the majority of lawns across the UK may not currently be the best reference point thanks to the endless heatwaves we've experienced so far this year turning the grass a yellowy-brown colour instead.
The colour has even had celeb-backing, with ultimate trend-setter Hailey Bieber recently sharing an Instagram post in which she could be seen wearing a vibrant green tank top. Captioning the post with a simple green heart and frog emojis, it seems the rhode founder is as obsessed with the cute colourway as we are. If it wasn't already set to be the colour of the summer before, safe to say it certainly will be now.
We couldn't quite figure out what to call the colour at first. It's not Brat Summer green that was everywhere when Charli XCX’s 2024 album came out, and it's definitely brighter and more energetic than a sage green. But then it finally clicked: lawn green. It makes the most sense! It's still saturated with both warm and cool tones, making it such a fun pop of colour for the season – especially at a time when fashion has been leaning all the way into boldness and maximalism.
But just because it's bright doesn't mean it has to be intimidating. If you base your wardrobe off Hailey's style and stick to a simple silhouette à la her scoop-neck tank with thick straps, the colour is in fact incredibly wearable. We've already started shopping for ways to get in on the look ourselves, and this crew neck cropped cardigan from M&S ticks all the boxes.
Its slim fit offers a sleek silhouette that pairs perfectly with everything from floaty A-line white skirts to loose linen trousers and even jeans (when the temperature allows). With a cropped length and short sleeves, it's ideal for combating office air-con without causing overheating when you're out and about. Just make sure to leave a few buttons undone at the top and bottom for an easy, breezy feel.
