We’re all guilty of it: applying far too many serums, treatments and actives in the hopes of achieving glowing, silky-smooth skin – so much so that we often overlook what our skin actually needs. Going too hard and fast with exfoliating acids and potent ingredients can cause your skin to feel distressed and sensitive. If this sounds all too familiar, it’s time to introduce one of the best skin barrier creams into your routine.

You may be familiar with the important role your skin barrier plays. Essentially, the skin barrier is the outermost layer that keeps all the good things (like moisture) in and the bad things (like UV pollution and external irritants) out. Happy skin barriers will appear hydrated, soothed and radiant. But, if damaged, it can open the doors to itchiness, breakouts and unwanted inflammation. Not good.

A barrier cream is jam-packed with all the best nourishing and skin-soothing ingredients to help replenish your barrier, without causing any more damage. Sounds ideal, right? We've asked the experts everything you need to know on how to keep your skin barrier in tip-top shape – and what to look for in a barrier-supporting cream.

The best barrier creams to try in 2026

How do you know if your skin barrier is damaged?

The good thing about your skin is that it’s clever: it will always tell you if something’s up. If you've damaged its defences, there are a few common signs to look out for. “Your skin barrier may be damaged if you notice signs of dryness, flakiness, redness, or irritation,” says medical doctor and founder of the Adonia Medical Clinic, Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme. This can often appear looking rash-like, or even a fresh eruption of breakouts. Lucky us.

How can you fix your skin barrier?

A damaged skin barrier can (most of the time) rectify easily. Dr Ejikeme advises using the below simple steps to help get skin back on track:

  • Switch up your skincare routine: “You should focus on using gentle skincare products, avoiding harsh exfoliants, and incorporating a moisturiser with skin barrier-strengthening ingredients,”.
  • Introduce replenishing ingredients into your regime: “Some of the best ingredients for strengthening the skin barrier include ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and fatty acids like linoleic acid”.
  • Simplify, simplify, simplify: The best thing you can do is to cut back on your skincare routine. Strip things back to just a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and SPF – and then slowly introduce back your treatments and additional serums.

Sticking to this routine is essential, as Dr Ejikeme says strengthening the skin barrier can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. This makes consistency *super* important.

What weakens the skin barrier?

While there are products that can fix the issue (hallelujah), it's important to understand why the problem has occurred, so you're not stuck in a toxic skincare cycle.

"Several factors can cause the skin barrier to weaken, including over-exfoliation, using harsh products, environmental factors such as pollution, exposure to extreme temperatures – like excessively hot showers – and genetics," says Dr Ejikeme.

Some are obviously outside of our control (hi, genetics), but if you think you've over-sensitised your skin, dropping harsh acids from your routine immediately is a must.

What should you stop doing when trying to improve your skin barrier?

If you’re dealing with a damaged skin barrier, there are a few things you should stop doing:

  • Cut back on exfoliating acids: While you’re healing your skin barrier, remove any harsh actives, retinols or exfoliating ingredients from your routine. Once your skin has settled, you can slowly introduce them again.
  • Stop using hot water: Hot water will only exacerbate redness and irritation further. Instead use lukewarm water to wash your face.
  • Stop over-cleansing: Over-cleaning with foaming washes can be stripping on your skin. Washing your face with a gentle, creamy cleansing in the morning (or with water alone) and again in the evening is usually enough.

How we test the best barrier creams:

When it comes to testing the beauty products, we (hi, your Cosmo beauty team) don’t mess around – especially when it comes to the best barrier creams. Maintaining a healthy, strong skin barrier is *so* important: if your barrier is happy, it will pave the way to hydrated, clear and radiant skin.

So if your barrier isn’t having the best time, we’ve tried and tested the most restoring repair creams you can buy in 2026. We took into consideration everything from the texture to the scent, to how quickly it soothed irritation and dryness. Each moisturiser was tested over the course of a week, allowing us to see how each formula performed in real-life conditions.
