13 best tinted moisturisers for glowy, lightweight coverage this summer – tried and tested
Hydration first, coverage second

The best tinted moisturisers come in handy all year round, but they become the MVPs in my makeup bag as soon as the temperatures rise – which, as anyone who lives in the UK will know, has been the case lately.
Not only are tinted moisturisers useful in the heat – their lightweight and hydrating properties provide easy coverage without feeling like you’re melting in makeup – but in recent years, more of us are opting for a less-is-more approach, relying on a dab of concealer and wash of tinted moisturiser over a full-glam foundation.
Tinted moisturisers may still allow freckles and texture to show through, but they’ll lend a fresh, “your-skin-but-glowier” finish while still softly evening out your skin tone. To finish? Add a sweep of bronzer and it’s enough to give a sunkissed look with a smooth complexion. IMO, it’s the ultimate no-makeup makeup product.

What’s the difference between a tinted moisturiser and a foundation?
One of the most common questions about tinted moisturisers is how they differ from foundation. The short answer? They’re lighter – but there’s more to it than that, according to Jess Kohn, Education & Events Manager for Laura Mercier.
“Whilst both facilitate the creation of achieving a flawless base, the main difference between a foundation and a tinted moisturiser is often down to its overall coverage and finish on the skin,” says Jess. “Foundations vary in coverage and typically focus on ensuring pigment and covering imperfections, whereas tinted moisturisers offer lighter coverage combined with skincare,” she adds.
How do you choose the right tinted moisturiser?
It’s important to consider your skin type and how much coverage you need. While tinted moisturisers are designed to be lighter alternatives to foundation, some are better suited to certain preferences and skin types than others.
Dry skin: “If you have dry skin, find one with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and green tea to keep the skin nourished and protected against environmental factors,” says Leanna Zaman, Boots Beauty Specialist. Your best options are the Sculpted by Aimee Hydra Tint or Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturiser Natural Dewy
Oily/acne prone skin: While tinted moisturisers are loved for their glow-boosting properties, that doesn’t mean you have to avoid them with oily or acne-prone skin. Fenty Beauty’s Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint is oil-free and it contains silica and talc to lend a blurred and pore-free finish.
Coverage: Tinted moisturisers are designed to be lighter options compared to foundations – they’re meant to make your skin look like skin, just glowier. Some formulas, like REFY’s Skin Tint and Charlotte Tilbury’s Flawless Filter lend that glossy, natural glow that allows texture and freckles to peep through. Whereas formulas like Vieve’s Complexion Balm and NARS’ Tinted Moisturiser offer a little more coverage while still keeping things natural.
But, most importantly, when looking for a tinted moisturiser you should always find one with SPF 25 or above.
