Introducing a sulphate-free shampoo into your weekly hair care routine may just be the most underrated hair hack in history – especially if you have colour-treated lengths.

Switching out your current shampoo (which is probably packed full of sulphates, though they aren’t necessarily bad – more on that later) for a sulphate-free formula is a must for giving your colour the TLC it deserves. Not only this, but the best sulphate-free formulas help to boost shine, moisture and improve overall manageability.

Here’s the thing about sulphates: they can be very beneficial for properly cleansing your scalp from grease and impurities. But they are also notorious for doing the same to your colour (more on that later). Considering how pricy a salon appointment can be nowadays, you want that colour staying in your strands for as long as possible.

The best sulphate-free shampoos...

What are sulphates?

Sulphates are responsible for that creamy lather you create by rubbing shampoo into your hair. Zoe Irwin, Creative Director at John Frieda Salons and Editorial Colour Ambassador at L’Oreal Paris Professional, explains how they get to work: “Sulphates are chemicals that are used as cleansing agents. They are great surfactants, meaning they can bind to both oil and water, allowing you to rinse grease and grime away more easily. They create a lather to help lift dirt, as opposed to sulphate-free shampoos which usually generate little to no foam.”

If you can't go a day without spritzing some dry shampoo, perhaps because you struggle with product build-up or have an oily scalp, sulphates are a ride or die ingredient for the intense clean that they offer.

If you find yourself ready to ditch the sulphates, we’ve also rounded up the best sulphate-free shampoos, all tested by our expert Cosmo Beauty Team. And keep scrolling as Zoe answers the FAQs around sulphate-free shampoos, like: are sulphates bad for your hair, or how often should you use a sulphate-free shampoo?

Living Proof Full Shampoo

Credit: Clare Stephenson

Pros

  • It mimics the benefits of silicones to boost shine and sleekness, without weighing down fine strands
  • Designed specifically for flat lengths, it helps to boost body and volume

Cons

  • It's expensive

Why we love: Living Proof’s Full Shampoo is one of the best in the industry if you want sky-high roots – plus, when you style with a round brush and voluming spray, the results are out of this world!

This is the type of shampoo that, even after one use, makes your hair feel genuinely soft, fresh and airy. It adds body and movement to flat lengths, giving the illusion you have more hair than what you actually do. Also, one of my favourite parts of a sulphate shampoo is the lather. It just makes me want to sing Pocket Full of Sunshine at the top of my lungs – if you know, you know. Though, despite being free of sulphates, this still lathers up well and has a fresh scent, too.

It may be a pricy bottle, but it gives weightless bounce to fine hair and boosts shine without loading on silicones.

Noughty Let's Bond Bond Repair Shampoo

Pros

  • The amino acid complex helps to rebuild broken bonds
  • It's affordable

Cons

  • Results are most effective when used with the other products in the range

Why we love: Noughty is proving that you don’t need to spend major £££ to find a good bond repair shampoo. The Let’s Bond shampoo contains a blend of 11 amino acids to repair and rebuild damaged bonds at a molecular level – essentially fixing damage from the inside out. Amino acids also provide protection, boost keratin production and add hydration.

Noughty also conducted clinical studies, and found that when this shampoo is used in a regimen (alongside the conditioner and leave-in treatment), participants saw an improvement in hair strength by 70% and a reduction in breakage. That’s right, this isn’t just a pretty face.

Best for fine hair

Olaplex No4 Fine Bond Maintenance Shampoo

Pros

  • It lathers into a creamy, hydrating foam
  • It clarifies but without using ingredients that weigh down fine hair
  • It also helps boost hydration, thanks to apricot oil

Cons

  • It's a pricier option

Why we love: Olaplex’s Bond Maintenance Shampoo is specifically designed to cleanse fine hair without weighing it down. It still has the same creamy, lather as the original Bond Maintenance shampoo, but a few changes have been made to make it suitable for those with thin strands.

It doesn’t include silicones – which can be heavy on fine hair – but instead uses surfactants to cleanse. It also contains lighter nourishing ingredients, like apricot oil, to boost hydration and shine, while an agent named sclerotium gum helps to increase volume. I was a huge fan of the OG formula, though, after trying this lightweight iteration, it showed me a side to Olaplex I never knew I needed. Full-bodied, clean, fresh-feeling hair come my way.

Conditioner: No4 Fine Bond Maintenance Conditioner

Best budget shampoo for growth

L’Oreal Paris Elvive Growth Booster Anti-Fall Shampoo

Pros

  • It's proven to reduce hair fall
  • It's affordable and accessible
  • It has a fresh, slightly floral fragrance

Cons

  • It helps prevent breakage and reduce fall, but it's not designed to boost growth

Why we love it: If you're noticing more shedding than usual (btw, we're meant to lose between 50 - 100 strands of hair a day), you may want to get yourself to a trichologist. In the meantime, the L'Oréal Paris Growth Booster Anti-Fall Shampoo will help clarify your scalp to encourage stronger and healthier growth.

A few uses of this won't solve all your hair-loss problems (once again, trichologist) but it's a good thing to use while on your growth journey. It’s all thanks to Aminexil: the core ingredient that helps to anchor hair fibres at the root to prevent shedding.

Best for dry, brittle hair

Davines OI Shampoo

Pros

  • It's suitable for all hair types
  • A little goes a long way

Cons

  • It's a little on the expensive side
  • It has a strong perfume scent

Why we love: If you’re working with dry, damaged, straw-like hair that needs some serious TLC, look no further than Davines’ OI Shampoo. The rich texture alone shows just how yummy and conditioning this formula is.

It’s packed with Roucou oil: a plant-derived ingredient that helps to hydrate dry strands, boost shine and maintain soft, silky hair. And boy, how it delivers. After every use my hair feels softer than ever before – and it even has the most decedent (but not sickly) scent. It's earned cult status for very good reasons.

Kèrastase Première Bain Dècalcifant Shampoo

Why we love it: Following four years of back-to-back hair extensions, this has been my go-to shampoo to bring health and life back into my strands. It’s formulated with pure citric acid and glycine to detoxify the scalp from hard minerals, product build up and grease – which, in turn, can cause further damage and a dull appearance.

Not only this, but the glycine works to rebuild broken keratin bonds caused by excessive heat exposure or colour treatments. It lathers into a rich, creamy foam and makes my strands feel super soft every time.

Hello Klean Full Cover Anti-Thinning Hard Water Shampoo

Pros

  • Prevents hard water damage by neutralising hard minerals, like heavy metals and chlorine
  • It strengthens hair and follicle health
  • It foams to a light and fluffy lather

Cons

  • It doesn't come with a matching conditioner

Why we love it: If your hair feels dry and straw-like, it’s a wise idea to find out if you live in a hard water area, as hard water deposits minerals onto your strands leaving them feeling crispy and dry – not to mention the effect it can have on your hair colour, too.

Hello Klean’s Full Cover Anti-Thinning Shampoo contains amino acids and AHA’s to neutralise hard water minerals, while astaxanthin prevents oxidative stress that can cause damage. There’s also biotin which helps to boost your hair’s strength. Besides its major cleansing powers, it also ticks the box for the sensorial experience. Pros

  • It's enriched with jojoba oil, green tea, and sage to boost hydration and manageability
  • It's a great option for colour-treated hair

Cons

  • Those with fine/oily hair may find the texture too rich

Why we love it: Anyone with colour-treated hair knows it's about as high maintenance as a puppy. If you can relate, this formula will give you a bit of a breather in between salon appointments with a boost in hair vibrancy. Don’t expect it to magically brighten your colour after one use, but it can keep things looking fresh, glossy and salon-worthy for longer, while preventing your shade from appearing dull or lacklustre between appointments.

It improves the condition of stands, too, thanks to a boost in moisture. Once dry, you'll see a reduction in flyaways and enjoy silky-smooth results.

Are sulphate-free shampoos better for coloured hair?

If you notice your colour fades quickly after just having it done, it may be time to swap to a sulphate-free shampoo. Shampoos that contain sulphates encourage the hair cuticle to open up, causing the colour pigment to move in and out freely. Yes, this makes your hair feel super clean, but it also causes colour to fade quickly.

Sulphate-free shampoos, on the other hand, are formulated with essential oils and gentle cleansing agents that cleanse away impurities rather than cleanse away colour, making them a great option if you want to prolong the skilful (and expensive) colour work of your hairdresser.

It’s still worth using a sulphate shampoo occasionally to clear away build-up and excess oil, but keeping a sulphate-free formula as your regular go-to will help keep your colour looking vibrant for longer.

line break

What are the benefits of a sulphate-free shampoo?

Sulphate-free shampoos can offer plenty of benefits depending on your hair type, but sulphates aren’t necessarily "bad". For example, many clarifying shampoos contain sulphates to properly cleanse the hair – it’s just a good idea to follow-up with a sulphate-free formula to put moisture pack in your strands. Because sulphates can strip the natural oils from your hair, which may leave your scalp dry and potentially irritated, sulphate-free shampoos are often gentler on your scalp and hair.

Zoe explains: “Those with coarse and naturally curly hair will find their hair is over-cleaned by regular shampoos, which is why they are attracted to sulphate-free options. Curly, coily and textured hair and those with rosacea, eczema or a sore, sensitive scalp can find sulphates to be aggravating.”

She also advises anyone who has keratin or straightening treatment to ditch the sulphates, as they can mess with its effects. As less lather is created, a sulphate-free option provides a gentler clean that is kinder to colour-treated or dry hair too, as some of your hair’s natural oils are left behind to nourish.

Zoe believes that sulphates aren't the devil they’re made out to be. “In a world where we have become ingredient savvy, it’s for people to choose based on their personal taste and the needs of the hair,” she says.

line break

Are sulphate-free shampoos damaging to your hair?

Zoe believes that both sulphate and sulphate-free shampoos have a spot in the bathroom, as both be used for different needs – a sulphate shampoo is brilliant to clarify and remove build-up while a sulphate-free shampoo keeps moisture in your strands. “Because of this, I like to do two washes: the first wash in sulphate shampoo and second sulphate-free.”

While sulphate-free shampoos aren’t damaging to the hair, Hannah Gaboardi, trichologist & Viviscal brand ambassador, says that they can cause build-up or leave the hair feeling greasy. “It’s important to double cleanse and use a sulphate free cleansing shampoo, which has the properties to gently cleanse without stripping the hair of natural oils or leaving it dry. When build up is left on the hair this can cause scalp conditions like dandruff or even more severe cases like seborrheic dermatitis,” she says.

line break

How often should you use a sulphate-free shampoo?

According to Hannah, how often you use a sulphate-free shampoo depends on your hair type. “For fine and straight hair, it’s recommended to use a sulphate-free shampoo, whereas for more curly and textured hair, it’s recommended to shampoo once a week.

Hannah also suggests pre-shampooing your hair before going in with a sulphate-free shampoo as this will help to remove product buildup on the scalp. “It is recommended to use a clarifying shampoo [usually containing sulphates] every 2 weeks this will help cleanse the hair, however an overuse of clarifying shampoos can dry out the hair,” adds Hannah.

And while sulphate shampoos don’t take much elbow grease to produce a lather, it’s important to remember that sulphate-free formulas need a little extra time to thoroughly cleanse the scalp. Once mixed with water, keep massaging the shampoo into your scalp for two-three minutes to properly cleanse your hair.

line break

Can all hair types use a sulphate-free shampoo?

“All hair types can use sulphate-free shampoo, however they’re especially beneficial for those with coarse or curly, dry or damaged and coloured hair types. Sulphate-free formulas use gentler cleansing agents to retain moisture in the hair. This is more gentle on the hair shaft so it won’t cause further damage,” says Hannah.
