Anne Hathaway is leading the charge on the coconut nail front. The actress attended the world premiere of her latest film The End of Oak Street in California over the weekend, and while much of the internet was focused on the reveal of her baby bump, the beauty editor in me couldn’t help but notice her sheer, milky manicure with an almost wet-looking gloss.
The luxe look has been dubbed the "coconut jelly gloss mani" by her nail artist Tom Bachik, aka the genius behind some of Hollywood's most sought-after hands, including Selena Gomez, JLo, Hailee Steinfeld and more. “We wanted a manicure that felt fresh, clean, and interesting,” Bachik tells Cosmo. “So, we went with a semi-opaque white to give us just a little more coverage while keeping depth and coconut is a great way to describe the summery white.”
"A Coconut Jelly Gloss Mani for @annehathaway 🥥 for tonight’s “The End of Oak Street” Premiere in Los Angeles this evening 💫 ✨," Bachik wrote in the caption of his Instagram post debuting the look, before revealing exactly how he created it.
Bachik says the secret is in the opacity. Rather than a bright white, Anne's nails have a translucent, jelly-like wash of color, with a glossy finish that makes them look perpetually fresh from a salon appointment.
Bachik says he began with the "perfect prep" using his Tom Bachik x Tweezerman tools, before applying Essie Nail Art Studio Jelly Gloss Polish in Arctic Jelly.
The result is the perfect quiet luxury mani that works for every occasion and any outfit, Hollywood premiere or not.
How to DIY coconut jelly nails
To recreate the coconut jelly gloss manicure yourself, start with neat, softly shaped nails. “Prep is everything, I love using my Tweezerman tools and files for meticulous cuticles and a consistent nail shape.” Bachik says. “It’s summer, people are active, and shorter nails are the trend,” he continues. “For Anne, I did soft square that’s strong, but not straight across.” and start with a clear base coat to protect the nail.
Once your nails are groomed to perfection, go in with a clear base coat to protect the nail. Then, apply one to two coats of your white hue for a sheer wash of color, allowing each layer to remain slightly translucent for that jelly effect. Continue layering until you reach your desired luscious milky glaze.
Finish with a high-shine top coat, et voilà! Coconut nails good enough to eat—or drink, depending on your preferred method of coconut consumption.
