There’s no better feeling than getting a manicure full of intricate designs and cool patterns, racking up dozens of compliments and boasting fingers that look like real-life works of art. On the downside, these sets take a lot of time (read: hours) and also a lot of skill. But there’s a fix to the time-consuming and artist-level experience required for some floral nails. Meet blooming gel, the easiest way to get professional-level art in mere minutes.
I was at the salon with a friend a few months back, where I opted for a French design, and she showed her manicurist a photo of a tortoiseshell pattern. I thought we would both be there for an hour or so. To my shock, her set was done in a mere 20 minutes, and she was left waiting for me until each of my French stripes was meticulously painted on 30 minutes later. I was amazed at the speed at which an animal print could be painted on—no airbrush machine or steady hands necessary.
“Blooming gel makes intricate nail art much more approachable,” says Miami-based celebrity nail artist John Avery. “It creates beautiful, organic movement that feels artistic and elevated while requiring less precision than hand-painting every detail, and it’s great for beginners, too.”

What is blooming gel?
“Blooming gel is a specialty clear gel that’s applied before your design,” explains Avery. “Once a dot of colored gel is placed on top, the pigments begin to naturally spread and diffuse outward, creating a soft ‘blooming’ effect that starts almost immediately.”
“Blooming gel allows you to achieve organic, fluid patterns that simply aren’t possible with traditional gel application,” he explains. And there’s a slew of designs that are ideal for the flowing paint technique—more on that below.

How to use blooming gel
“Start by choosing two colors with plenty of contrast if you really want the blooming effect to stand out,” explains Avery. The easiest way to accentuate your design is by starting with a neutral or milky base. Once your base and clear coat of blooming gel are dry, dot on your color gel in the areas and shapes that you want your pattern to flow, working one nail at a time.
“The blooming process begins as soon as the color touches the gel, so watch the design develop, and once it reaches your desired look (usually within about 30 seconds), cure it immediately under your LED lamp to preserve the effect,” explains Avery. “I love how every nail develops a slightly different pattern, making each set feel one of a kind.”
The best designs for blooming gel
“My favorite blooming gel designs are snakeskin, floral designs, and abstract ink-like patterns,” says Avery. “Snakeskin creates a luxe look, and blooming flowers have become especially popular recently because they create soft, dimensional petals with very little effort.”
