Sorry, Milk Nails—Ombré French Is the Subtle Manicure Trend Taking Over

It’s a sheer mani summer.

My beauty vibe can mostly be described as maximalist. Give me color, texture, movement—I want it all. But the one exception is my nails. I keep ’em short and sweet, usually opting for a soft color or French tips. It’s chic, dare I say, expensive-looking. But after a while, sheer manicures can get boring. What’s the answer? A trendy ombré French.

Think of the ombré French as an elevated, softer version of the timeless French mani. Instead of a harsh line, the seamless fade from sheer color to an off-white (or whatever color you choose, more on this below) gives your nails a more subtle, clean finish. Oh, and they truly go with anything, hence why they’re quickly rising in ranks as one of the chicest manicure trends right now. Need some inspo to inspire your next appointment? Keep scrolling.

What is ombré French?

Instead of a defined line between the tip of the nail and the base, an ombré French manicure (sometimes called the “French fade”) has color at the tip of the nail that diffuses into a sheer, skin-like shade. The subtle gradient adds dimension and feels special, but it’s still polished and goes with everything. Plus, you can absolutely tailor the look to your preferences, like adding a chrome finish or swapping the colors for something a bit brighter (see my fave pink options below).

To get the look, your nail tech will likely use a sponge or blending brush to diffuse the polish into the base color. Or they might even go full Y2K with it and employ an airbrush machine to get extra-soft edges.

FYI: Don’t get confused by ombré French and invisible French manis. Invisible French forgoes the typical stark, bright-white tip in favor of a softer, off-white or ecru shade. The difference, though, is there’s still a defined line. With an ombré French moment, there is no true “edge” between the sheer base color and the tip’s shade. Feel free to show the below images to your nail artist if they need a visual.

Just as classic as the NYC skyline, this ombré French on Madelyn Cline is understated and elegant.

When in doubt, add chrome. It makes everything prettier.

A brighter pink done in this ombré style feels playful yet luxurious. I think Elle Woods would approve.

A bright color makes an ombré French mani way more summery (and cooler, if you ask me).

Just saying, these would make incredible bridal nails, especially with a bright-white tip.
