Beds get all the credit, but they’re hardly the only piece of furniture worth having sex on. In fact, if you’ve never tried chair sex positions, you’re missing out. Sometimes all it takes is moving from the bed to a sturdy dining chair to make a familiar position feel brand new. “A regular dining chair can be great for riding and straddling a partner. A high-top stool or chair may be perfect for standing oral with the receiving partner seated,” says Jess O’Reilly, PhD, resident sexologist at Astroglide.

There’s also a practical reason chairs work so well. “They’re great for the ‘mechanics’ of sex,” says Mariah Freya, CEO of Beducated, a digital pleasure-based sex education platform. “Chairs have smooth and sturdy surfaces, so you can achieve different angles and positions on them. A new angle can stimulate pleasure zones more effectively, which can increase the chances of orgasm during penetrative sex.”

Another perk? You pretty much always have access to a chair. Unless you’re standing in line at Space Mountain, odds are there’s a private place to sit.

Before you get started, make sure your chair is sturdy enough for whatever you have planned. And if it’s upholstered, throw down a towel or blanket first. “Upholstery is not sexy to clean, and you probably don’t want suspicious stains hanging around in your living room,” says Tara Struyk, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Kinkly.

Once you’ve found a chair you trust, here are the best chair sex positions to try.

1

Easy Oral

How to Do It: Find a sturdy chair and have the receiver plant their feet firmly on the seat with their knees open. The giver kneels on the floor to give oral sex.

Pros: “This method is easier and more comfortable than oral sex in bed,” says Freya.

Cons: Kneeling can be uncomfortable for the giver. Freya suggests putting a pillow or folded blanket under the giver’s knees for extra comfort.

Switch It Up: The receiver can kiss their partner, run their hands through their hair, or gently hold their face to make the experience feel even more connected.

Make It Hotter: “If the receiver wants extra stimulation, they can use a suction-cup dildo or another hands-free sex toy,” says Freya.

Chair 69

How to Do It: To give 69 a more acrobatic edge, try it in a chair. One of you sits in a chair (try to be this person). The other person gets on top of the other, turning upside down so that your crotches are in each other’s faces.

Pros: Mutual oral with an added challenge for people who enjoy adventurous positions.

Cons: This is more about the novelty. If you are determined to make it work, a sturdy chair with wide armrests will make it easier. Sometimes it’s more about trying something new together than reaching orgasm in that specific position.

Switch It Up: The seated person can use a vibrator or other toy instead of their mouth.

Make It Hotter: Lean into the novelty with a fun flavored lube.

Menage a Chair

How to Do It: Take your sex airborne with the apex. Have the receiver stand facing a sturdy chair and bend over so their palms are firmly planted on the seat. The giver stands behind them, holds onto their hips, and lifts them up to enter. The receiver wraps their legs back behind their partner’s waist.

Pros: Works anally or vaginally for a new angle on deep penetration, plus the excitement of trying something new together.

Cons: Requires a fair amount of strength, balance, and coordination. If you start and it’s not working out, don’t be afraid to switch to something else with less hoisting.

Switch It Up: For an easier version (for the receiver at least), the receiver can lower themselves onto their elbows.

Make It Hotter: You won’t be able to see each other’s faces so use moans, commands, and raspy pleas to let each other know exactly what you need.

Dinner Is Served

Two stylized figures in aquatic poses, one supporting the other, set against a white background with a blue horizontal line.

How to Do It: Have the giving partner sit on a chair at the dining table, and the receiver lie in front of them with their legs over their partner’s shoulders to raise their pelvis a bit.

Pros: This position is especially great for people with vulvas, as it creates an angle that makes it easier to reach the inner hot spots and cervix, says Freya.

Cons: Tables aren’t super comfortable. Put down a cushy (and washable) blanket for a more comfortable experience.

Switch It Up: Literally switch it up by trading places.

Make It Hotter: The giving partner can use an oral sex toy on their partner while simultaneously using a lubed finger on their partner’s butt or in their vagina.

Closer to Mine

Two figures with contrasting skin tones sit closely, engaged in an intimate moment, with playful hairstyles and colorful accents.

How to Do It: To go really deep with your partner, share a chair. The giver sits facing the rear of the chair, while the receiver sits on their partner’s lap facing the other way, says Freya.

Pros: “This intimate position encourages kissing, eye contact, and emotional connection alongside physical intimacy during penetrative sex,” says Freya.

Cons: The up-close eye contact might be too intense for some. If so, just bring it into a hug to keep the intimacy without the eye contact.

Switch It Up: For a non-penetrative option, lube up your hands and stroke each other as you rock and grind.

Make It Hotter: If you want deeper orgasms with all that intimacy, feel free to add a vibrating cock ring.

The Easy Chair

How to Do It: For a basic starter chair sex position, one person sits on a chair, the other faces them and straddles their lap. If you’re going for penetration, the receiver lowers themselves onto the penetrating partner’s penis or dildo and moves as they please, a la cowgirl position.

Pros: The person on top can control how slow or fast they want to go. It’s also perfect for couples who like kissing, cuddling, and some butt and breast play.

Cons: Chair sex can get a little messy, so throw down some washable towels or blankets to protect your furniture.

Switch It Up: The person on the bottom holds onto the receiver and thrusts up.

Make It Hotter: If the receiver has a vulva, the giver can use their fingers to stimulate their clitoris while they ride.

The Sit Your Ass Down

How to Do It: Add some drama with light bondage play. “A chair with arms is perfectly designed for tying down your wrists,” says O’Reilly. One person sits obediently down, the other binds their wrists to the chair’s arms. “Use silk scarves, neckties, or bondage cuffs.” The giver teases the receiver with their hands and mouth and/or a toy.

Pros: Bondage helps you both focus on the moment and play with dominance and submission.

Cons: Being completely restrained can be upsetting or uncomfortable for some people. For a less intense option, the giver can just hold down the receiver’s wrists with their hands, ready to let go immediately if the receiver doesn’t like it.

Switch It Up: If one of you is usually more submissive, switch roles and see what happens.

Make It Hotter: You can also tie the receiver down at their ankles or use a blindfold to tease and build anticipation, says O’Reilly.

The Champagne Room

Couple embracing intimately, with a focus on their bodies and colorful body art.

How to Do It: One person sits on a sturdy chair. The other person sits on their partner’s lap, sliding onto their penis/strap-on. Use your feet and the chair arms for leverage.

Pros: It works for anal or vaginal sex and both partners’ hands are free for rubbing, touching, and holding toys.

Cons: Not a ton of inherent clit stim. But, fixable! “Vibrator highly recommended!” says Struyk.

Switch It Up: Mix thrusting with some lap dance grinding.

Make It Hotter: Try a vibrating cock ring that adds stimulation for both the penis and clitoris.

The Dog Chair

Illustration of two stylized figures in an intimate pose with vibrant hair colors.

How to Do It: A chair gives you a soft perching spot for a modified version of doggy. “If the chair has a large enough seat, the receiver can kneel on the chair while the giver penetrates from behind,” says love and relationships coach Nicole Moore.

Pros: The deep penetration doggy is known for, plus a soft surface for the receiver to rest their arms and head on.

Cons: Doggy isn’t known for a lot of clitoral stimulation. To add some, the receiver can slide a hand or toy between their legs.

Switch It Up: It also works for pegging or any other anal situation.

Make It Hotter: If you want to amp up the stimulation, straddle the arm (sturdy, upholstered chair only) with a vibrator propped between your body and the chair arm. The giver can kneel, crouch, or stand with their hands on the chair for leverage.

The All Hail the Queen

How to Do It: Chairs are also great for oral sex, aka face-sitting, aka queening. The receiver sits down with their legs spread a little. The giver kneels before the receiver with their mouth between the receiver’s legs. The receiver scootches to the edge of the chair and leans forward onto their partner’s mouth to ride their face.

Pros: The receiver can completely focus on their own pleasure.

Cons: There can be no queen without subjects. If you’re going solo, go with a toy that mimics oral.

Switch It Up: The giving partner can enhance their worship with their hands and/or a vibrator or dildo.

Make It Hotter: Try it on a sex-position enhancer, also known as a throne, with a hole in the seat for easy access.
