Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got all dressed up for a swanky evening spent at the David Foster Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Celebration in Canada last Friday, and the couple couldn’t resist turning heads—Harry looked dapper, as per usual, in a black suit and tie, and Meghan was the epitome of Montecito royalty in a slinky black one-shoulder gown. But her blink-and-you’ll miss it accessories for the evening paid a subtle homage to Princess Diana.
For their night out, the Duchess wore Diana’s diamond and sapphire butterfly-shaped earrings to give herself a touch of sparkle. The earrings popped against her slicked-back bun and her natural glam.
Princess Diana wore these exact earrings during a trip to Canada with then-Prince Charles in 1986. The trip, which saw her and Charles open up the Expo ’86 World's Fair, saw them making stops in Vancouver and Prince George. Unlike Meghan, Diana wore the earrings with a matching necklace that featured a large diamond and sapphire-encrusted butterfly at its center.
Meghan previously wore the earrings during her and Prince Harry’s tour of Australia in 2018 and their 2024 tour of Colombia.
The butterfly earrings aren’t the only piece of Diana’s jewelry that Meghan owns—per Vogue, she’s also in possession of Diana’s “diamond tennis bracelet, her Cartier Tank Louis, and Diana’s iconic aquamarine ring (also known widely as her ‘divorce ring’).”
Meghan has said that she likes using her fashion and choice of accessories as a way of making a statement. “It influences how we feel and what we project. And even if you don’t say a word, you can convey something in what you wear,” she said in an April interview with Australian Women’s Weekly. “I usually gravitate to tonal dressing because it looks streamlined, but I also find it a lot easier to put a look together that way. It removes some of the guesswork and feels timeless.”
