Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere have several things in common (like starring in FX’s upcoming The Shards), but top of the list? The fact that their parents literally used to be married. It’s a small world when your zip code is 90210!

While Cindy Crawford has been married to Kaia’s dad Rande Gerber since 1998, she and Richard Gere were married from 1991 to 1995 and were one of the biggest Hollywood It Couples of the ’90s. Clearly it’s about time o’clock for a look back on their relationship.

The pair met at a barbecue hosted by photographer Herb Ritts and immediately hit it off. They eloped in Vegas a few years later (Herb was there!) and wore tinfoil rings—not exactly Cindy’s dream wedding, apparently.

“Richard and I had been dating for several years, and at one point, I was like, 'Are we doing this or what?' And he said, 'Let's go to Vegas tonight,’” Cindy said, per Yahoo. “It wasn't the wedding I dreamed of. It was so last minute I wore this Armani suit. It was a nice Armani suit, but I didn't dream of getting married in a navy blue suit. And the ring was made out of tinfoil because it was so last minute. But I did have Herb Ritts as my bridesmaid — and taking the pictures!”

They Had a 17-Year Age Gap

Cindy chatted to Oprah's Master Class about their age difference, saying, “I was still 22, and at 22—as a young woman—I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be. I just think your 20s for women is such a time when you’re starting to come into your own and feel your own power and connect to your inner strength, and it's hard to do that—it's hard to change — in a relationship, because what one person might have signed up for, all of a sudden, you're not that anymore.”

Cindy Molded Herself to Make the Relationship Work

In The Super Models docuseries, Cindy said (via ET) that “In the beginning of a relationship, when you're a young woman, you’re like, 'You like baseball? I like baseball. You’re really into Tibetan Buddhism? I might be into that. I’ll try that. You’re willing to kind of mold yourself around whoever you are in love with.”

They Broke Up Because They Didn’t Spend Enough Time Together

Cindy told Porter magazine, via People, that their respective careers didn’t let them “spend enough time together,” noting “we’re equally responsible for that. We thought it would be okay if we just flew in from Paris to L.A. to get together for a night to see each other. It wasn't.”

They’re Still (Kinda) in Touch

Cindy told the WTF podcast that “We’re friendly, but I think it’s almost like he’s gone back to being, like, ‘Richard Gere’ again, like a stranger, because we don’t really see each other that much. I think part of the problem in our relationship was that we were a lot of other things, but I don’t know if we were ever friends—like peers, because I was young, and he was Richard Gere.”

Maybe they’ll hang together more now that their kids are friends? And on that note, watch The Shards when it premieres on August 5, 2026, on FX (streaming on Hulu).
