As Bank Holiday weekend fast approaches and we head deep into the season of Easter food, our mouths are already salivating at the thought of hot cross buns dripping in butter.
But the toasted bun dream might be cut short this year, after Metro reported the price of hot cross buns are set to soar due to a raisin shortage. You're joking.
Apparently, Californian farmers are struggling to produce enough raisins to supply the demand for dried fruit, and prices of raisins have risen by 50% in America since September.
It’s thought that 275,000 tonnes of raisins, sultanas and currents will be produced in 2017-18 - which is an 8% reduction on last year and is 15% below the five-year average.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RAISINS IN OUR HOT CROSS BUNS? SOMEBODY THINK ABOUT THE HOT CROSS BUNS.
The Independent say British bakers bakers are looking to Australia's raisin crop to fill the gap, but earlier this month it was reported that harvesting of the 2017 sultana crop was running two or three weeks behind the previous season.
So basically, stock up on hot cross buns while you can, 'cause they're either about to get way more expensive, or run out completely. Eek.
