Iconic disabled and neurodivergent style setters to follow on Instagram

We. Love. Every. Single. One.

By Lauren Nathan-Lane

From streetwear and Cottagecore to vintage and dopamine dressing; disabled and neurodivergent fashion icons are smashing this season's most popular trends. As a disabled model, writer and campaigner myself, I'm especially keen for the conversation around diversity in the fashion industry to continue in a meaningful way. Sure, we still have a way to go when it comes to genuine and non-tokenistic representation of disabled people (and other marginalised groups) within fashion, but we're on the right track.

In my experience, disabled people are used to being stared at or made to feel bothered, and our bodies are often politicised. For me, embracing fashion is a way of reminding wider society that marginalised bodies are multi-faceted, complex, beautiful and deserve to be represented rather than hidden away.

So, in that spirit, I'm rounding up a few of my favourite disabled and neurodivergent creators. Whether you're disabled or not, these accounts are perfect to follow if you need a little more outfit inspo in your life. Plus, by supporting and uplifting more disabled individuals, you will be showing the fashion world that the public wants to see more badass disabled and neurodivergent style-setters repping their brands.

These are the accounts making me want to run (or wheel) to my wardrobe and experiment with some new colour combos this summer.

@shelbykinsxo

No list of iconic style setters would be complete without Shelby. Reminding us how great early 2000s Bratz and Powerpuff Girls fashion is, Shelby’s gram is a sensation of bright colours and nostalgia.

2

@luuudaw

From stunning lingerie to wearable 'drinks with the girls' dresses, Lucy encourages us disabled babes to pair our most glamorous 'fit with a matching stick. She even has her own incredible edit with SimplyBe which considers those with extra access needs.

3

@rollinfunky

Clara has got to be one of the best disabled style setters to follow for #OOTD inspiration. Covering an array of bold and beautiful patterns, she’ll definitely help you decide what to wear to brunch with your friends this weekend.

4

@sianlord_

Effortlessly glamorous Sian will light up anyone's timeline with her chic style, gorgeous lingerie and comfortable yet classy activewear. Her aim? To make people feel empowered one post at a time, and she certainly does that.

@lucyjane.fashion

Lucy Jane is a neon queen, she brightens up our feeds with her quirky co-ords and feminine pairings. Identifying as a person with a chronic condition, her account is great to follow if you love vibrant, stand-out pieces. She also finds the best charity shop buys, encouraging us to make more sustainable fashion choices.

@fashionbellee

You can always rely on Sophie to show us the very best high street pick-ups. She inspires us all to be bolder with our colour combinations and even has the cutest matching outfits with her little one <33

7

@Elliedarbyp

Queen of '70s vintage vibes, the blonde bombshell that is Ellie deserves to be on every list of iconic disabled fashionistas. A reminder also to us wheelchair users that we can get away with killer heels without the heel pain!

@ capricekwai

Caprice knows how to match any outfit with a fire pose. We love her contemporary styling along with her self-designed statement jewellery to finish off any look with a flourish.

9

@foreveryoursbetty

Total dopamine dresser Betty wows us with her tangerine aesthetic. Often bringing back vintage prints and cuts, Betty, who identifies as neurodivergent, demonstrates that fashion should be about enjoying yourself.

@zoes_story

Zoë’s approach of dressing solely for enjoyment comes through clearly on their Instagram. We absolutely covet their gorgeous handmade dresses and second-hand Selkie finds.

11

@amazeaynab

Stunning Zainab gives us contemporary glam on her Instagram grid. Styled effortlessly, we’re big fans of her mini dresses and co-ord sets which she pairs every time with a striking model pose.

@_ellawillis

Ella's Instagram and TikTok mixes eye-catching design prints with classical tailored wear and rollnecks. Their socials are a great mix of education, fashion and fun, which I'm all about.

@wheelingalong24

Robyn, who identifies as disabled and chronically ill, is an absolute pro when it comes to vintage Cottagecore dressing. Their fashion Instagram transports us into a whimsical world of Bridgerton-worthy circle skirts and pinafore dresses.
