We are less than two weeks away from June, which means daily summer dress weather is practically within reach. Sure, the weather might not currently be playing ball (what is all this rain about?!), but the bank holiday weekend's forecasted heatwave has us prepping our wardrobes so we can tackle the temperatures while looking *and* feeling cool.
A summer dress is undoubtedly the easiest option. Simply throw it on and go, just add sandals – accessories optional. As for your dress of choice, if it's style points you're after, then consider a drop-waist design your only option after the silhouette was spotted across the SS26 (and AW26!) runways at the likes of Chanel, Dior, Simone Rocha, and Balenciaga.
However, a quick poll of the Cosmopolitan UK office confirmed the style was considered controversial, receiving mixed reviews as to just how flattering it could be. If you're similarly dubious, then allow us to suggest a drop-waist midi skirt as your access point into the look.
Just as popular on the designer runways, the drop-waist midi skirt was amongst several styles on show in what we're coining the season of the statement skirt. At Tory Burch, it was drop-waist preppy pleated numbers riding low on the waist. Meanwhile, Rabanne opted for soft, flowing A-line styles with elongated waistbands finishing almost at the mid-thigh, contrasting Alaïa's more voluminous and colourful creations.
Similar to its all-in-one dress counterpart, the fitted dropped waist lends itself to visually creating the appearance of a longer and leaner torso. Whether you opt for a curved seam to add definition or a more narrow drop waist to avoid drawing attention to your widest part totally depends on your body shape. Regardless, the beauty of a skirt option means added versatility, allowing you to pair different tops and jackets for greater styling options.
Always a plus in our books, though more effort is required to pull an ensemble together. Unless you opt for Primark's dropped waist midi skirt with coordinating bubble hem top. The two-piece set allows you to mix and match your look while effortlessly tapping into the drop-waist trend with a ready-to-go outfit. And in lemon yellow – AKA one of this season's biggest colour trends – too!
