When it comes to meme-worthy red carpets, it really doesn't get much better than the Met Gala. The combination of A-list celebrities, niche themes and OTT outfits is like a match made in meme heaven giving the internet a solid dose of content to get creative with.

Over the years, some of our favourite Met memes include Kim Kardashian's Dementor references, along with Rihanna's iconic giant yellow dress, which was transformed into everything from pizza to an omelette. Maybe it's how grand the whole event is, or the simple fact we're normally offering our expert opinions on the fancy celeb looks from the comfort of tracksuit bottoms and messy buns. Whatever it is, perusing Twitter and Instagram for funny commentary from the fashion event is one of our favourite things to do.

For context, this year's Met Gala theme is 'In America: An Anthology of Fashion' - which is basically a celebration of America's fashion history. According to Vogue, the dress code for the gala is "gilded glamour, white tie." And, what ensued was pretty darn chic, although that didn't stop the meme artists from having some fun.
