1Game of Thrones
HBO 2My Lady Jane
Jonathan PrimeWant to root for a forced/political/arranged marriage to lovers couple with characters who aren't on the same family tree? This series is funny, romantic, magical, and committed to being weird to an awe-inspiring degree. It's also a feminist take on the true story of Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for nine days before she was unseated and executed.

4Harlots
huluThis series is one of my favorite recent-ish underrated gems. It's about dueling groups of sex workers in 18th-century London. The two brothels have opposing aesthetics and ideologies, but ultimately the women working there just want to pursue economic freedom and are threatened by an emerging religious/moral current in society.

Amazon PrimeThis show has magic and a mythical saviour known as the "dragon reborn"–veeeeery Azor Ahai prophecy, if you ask me.

6Revenge
ABCOkay hang on.... remember Revenge?? It was based on The Count of Monte Cristo and about a girl named Emily Thorne hell-bent on tearing the rich families of the Hamptons apart. She's definitely got that Targaryen blood in her veins.

7Veep
HBOAlicent Hightower is learning the hard way that men will jump at the opportunity to keep you an arm's length away from power. Selina Meyer can tell you all about that. How they deal with that could not be more different, but I'll say this: neither of them are feminists! Anti-heroes are just that much more fun to watch sometimes.

9Andor
Disney+Star Wars is probably not the first (or second or third) thing that you think of when you think of House of the Dragon. The worlds are very, very different. However, what Andor offered is a nuanced, intelligent tale of ordinary people working to take down an oppressive regime that I think fans of Thrones could get into–especially if you're loving the subplot in HOTD season two about the smallfolk turning against Team Green.

10The Rings of Power
Prime VideoHouse of the Dragon is set over a hundred years before Game of Thrones, and The Rings of Power is set over five thousand years before The Lord of the Rings. But the similarities end there. For one thing, Rings of Power takes its time while House of the Dragon speeds through time. For another, you don't need to worry about the characters in The Rings of Power getting sexually harassed or assaulted at any moment. That's a nice change, right?

11Shadow and Bone
NetflixOf the shows that tried to capture the hearts of Game of Thrones fans in the immediate aftermath of the series finale, Shadow and Bone was my favourite. Viserys may have thought his daughter was the Chosen One, but Alina actually is in her universe. She has a power that can save the world if others don't steal it first. There's also, like, sooooo much romantic angst you'll want to die—and none of it is between aunts and uncles or siblings, yay!

12The Last Kingdom
NetflixThis historical drama takes place in the 800s. Yes, you read that right. Medieval times were yet to come. But there are swords and dirt and castles galore. If you like going further and further back in time like House of the Dragon did, you might want to check it out.

13The Crown
netflixA) Matt Smith is in the first couple of seasons and B) it's about how Elizabeth II suddenly and unexpectedly found herself heir to the throne. Very similar stories, just different settings! I wonder who the Princess Diana of House of the Dragon will turn out to be...

14The Tudors
ShowtimeThis series, about the real-life Henry VIII and his six wives, is about the messiest people living (and dying) for the drama you will ever meet. Seriously. It also has a cast full of actors who later went on to become famous for Game of Thrones and other things, like Natalie Dormer, Henry Cavill, Tamzin Merchant, etc.

15Becoming Elizabeth
STARZJumping ahead further in history, this new series about what happened to the future Elizabeth I in the immediate aftermath of her father's death will remind you a lot of House of the Dragon. Lots of men in dark rooms making decisions, shuffling teenagers around, and training monarchs. (It's the same story as My Lady Jane, BTW, just with a very different tone.)

16The White Princess
STARZIf you just want to watch historical dramas about real royal families centuries ago, Starz (which you can access via Prime Video) actually has a load of them. I chose The White Princess because I'm obsessed with Jodie Comer after Killing Eve but there's also The White Queen and The Spanish Princess.

17The Great
HuluIf your favourite thing about House of the Dragon so far has been watching unlikely families make it work and/or the opulence of Westeros during this time period, then you might like this series. It pokes fun at historical sexism in a way that might feel like a relief after the ickier parts of HotD. It has the scheming and fashion sense of House of the Dragon with about ten times the jokes.

18Succession
Peter Kramer//SkyThere are no dragons, no prophecies, no incest (that we know of) and no kingdoms on Succession... but aren't they basically about the same thing? It's about a fight between siblings and outside forces to see who will take over the family business/empire. The only difference is that King Viserys already kicked the bucket in season one, while Logan Roy is still hanging on.

19Once Upon A Time In Wonderland
Disney+The ABC series and spin-off of Once Upon A Time is decidedly cornier than House of the Dragon, however, don't you deserve a show with a happy ending? It's a one-and-done season show where Alice returns to Wonderland as an adult and falls in love with a genie (hot) and then teams up with the Knave of Hearts, who's in love with the Red Queen (hot), to rescue him when he gets captured.

BBCThis show's dragon isn't nearly as advanced when it comes to CGI, but the YA take on Camelot is an all-timer. Come for the dynamic between Arthur and Merlin and stay for all of the Knights of the Round Table who are introduced in later seasons. And Guinevere! And Morgana!
