Met Gala 2024: All the celebs who skipped the event

Bad news, Gossip Girl fans. Blake Lively skipped the 2024 Met Gala, despite being in New York just last week for a Tiffany's event.

A refresher that the actor skipped the Met Gala in 2023 because she had just welcomed her fourth child, and shared a photo of herself at home pumping with the caption 'First Monday in May.'

Tbh, the celeb probs spent this year in as well given the fact that her youngest bb is still, well, young! Of course, there could be a multitude of other reasons too, and sadly Blake hasn't confirmed why yet - maybe she's filming elsewhere for a new project? Or gearing up for a major It Ends With Us press run?

Either way, we're sad not to see her on the steps this year.

Bella Hadid recently stepped back from (super)modelling and moved to Texas, which meant that when the celeb came back to New York City to promote the launch of her perfume brand, Ôrəbella, everyone naturally thought she'd stop by the 2024 Met Gala. Yet, dear reader, that's exactly what didn't happen, so yes,

Bella was another celeb absent from the steps for 2024.

FYI, Bella recently opened up to Allure about leaving the industry and her new life in Texas and noted, “I realised I was putting so much energy and love and effort into something that, in the long run, wasn't necessarily giving it back to me.”

Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber have skipped the 2024 Met Gala amid concern the singer is going through a hard time after posting a photo of himself crying, according to new reports.

A source tells Entertainment Tonight, “Justin has been facing some difficulties lately. He has been having a hard time and hasn’t been feeling like his usual self. Hailey has been doing her best to be there for Justin, but it is upsetting for her to see him struggle. They are doing their best to make things work and be supportive of each other. They are committed to doing whatever it takes to make things better.”

Of course, it could be *another* reason, as the pair themselves haven't spoken out about what's going on.

Several outlets reported that Taylor Swift "passed on" the event this year despite receiving an invitation. Tay hasn't attended since she was one of the gala's co-chairs in 2016 (pictured here), and according to her Eras Tour schedule, she's set to continue her international leg on 9th May — just three days after the Met Gala.

She'll be hitting up Paris, France, and is likely deep in rehearsal mode - especially if she wants to include songs from her brand new album The Tortured Poets Department.

Per TMZ, “sources with direct knowledge” say Travis and Taylor were “each issued individual invitations to the Met Gala."

It's unclear why Travis decided not to go to the fashion event (maybe he didn't want to go without Tay?) but he recently confirmed Entertainment Tonight that he'll be attending some international Eras Tour shows. “She’ll be all over Europe. There won’t be a bad show, I promise you that. Oh, you know I gotta go support. You know it,” he told the outlet.

Anne Hathaway has attended the Met Gala a tonne over the years, most recently in 2023 (and pictured here way back in 2015), but sadly chose to skip the occasion for 2024.

According to multiple reports, it could be to do with the fact she's just been on the press run for The Idea Of You - but then again, Nicholas Galitzine was at the event, so who knows!

Just last month, she spoke about collaborating with designer Donatella Versace, who walked the red carpet, musing with Vogue, "A Versace woman is fierce, smart, sweet, powerful, snd doesn’t take things for granted. And funny! That was one of the things that was a delight to learn about Donatella, is that she’s really funny and very quick to laugh."

Despite attending the Met Gala on multiple different occasions now (pictured in 2021 but most recently in 2023), Billie didn't make an appearance this year. But why? Well, it's not entirely clear - the singer was on social media yesterday [6th May] promoting her upcoming album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, and didn't say anything about the event.

Speaking to Howard Stern about the Met Gala in 2021, Billie revealed that "it's nuts” and basically consists of “famous people famous people-ing.” Fair.

Sadly, Margot Robbie was also absent from this year's Met Gala - because she's on the west coast of America shooting a new project.

According to Cosmo US, she's in Los Angeles filming for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which her production company Lucky Chap is also producing.

Back in January, she told Deadline that she would put a pause on acting prior to the project. "Everyone’s like, ‘Are you having a break?’ And I’m like, ‘You do know I’m a producer, right? We don’t get a break. The producing is 24/7, but on the acting side, this is the longest I haven’t acted on a set, because we finished Barbie in October of 2022. So, it’s already been more than a year since I was on set as an actor, and other than COVID, that’s the first time that’s ever happened."

Billy Porter last shut down the Met Steps with his show-stopping pharaoh-inspired look in 2019, but he revealed that he will not be attending this year's event as his mother recently passed away in February. “I just lost my mum,” Billy told E! News at the TIME 100 Gala on 25th April. “I have to take care of myself, so I’m doing that. And that means not going to the party sometimes.”

Jared Leto has pulled up to the Met Gala in some iconic headline-worthy looks over the years (ahem, last year, he literally dressed as Karl Lagerfeld's cat, Choupette). However, the actor and musician is skipping out on this year's festivities as his band 30 Seconds to Mars is headed to Europe for their Seasons World Tour. "Back on the road," he told E! News on 1st April. "It's been five years. I will be there in spirit with my head and my cat wishing everybody a beautiful night."

Unfortunately Jenna Ortega didn't make her third appearance at the Met Gala this year, because she's busy filming for the second season of Netflix's Wednesday.

According to Deadline, it began filming in late April in Ireland, so New York would've been a little far to go for one evening.

After making their Met Gala debut as a couple during the 2023 event, Kourtney and Travis skipped this year's red carpet and dinner. Why? Well, not only have they very recently welcomed their first child together (their son Rocky was born in November), but have been sharing insights into their family holiday to the Bahamas on Instagram.

I'd take the tropical paradise any day, tbh.

Despite attending her first ever Met Gala in 2023, wearing Balmain, Ice Spice wasn't present at this year's event, though it's not 100% clear why.
