Death in Paradise may be over for another season, after the epic final episode aired this evening, but we've still got lot of burning questions about the show...namely, what is going on with Mattie?
Sergeant Mattie Fletcher, played by Catherine Garton, was a new character for this season and quickly became popular with fans. Early on in the season, we got a hint that Mattie is keeping a secret from the rest of the force in Saint Marie.
In episode five, after being accosted by a suspect who tried to pursue a romantic relationship with her and she rejects him, Mattie revealed she had "messed up" on a previous case back when she worked in Jamaica.
And in tonight's episode we get another insight into what is going on when Mattie starts to avoid someone calling her and confiding in the Commissioner (Don Warrington) about what is going on.
Except we don't really get answer as to what exactly she is so afraid and what happened to her in Jamaica. However, some fans have pieced together what they think has happened and it makes a lot of sense.
What happened to Mattie?
Back in episode five Mattie is approached by one of the actors in the play who is being as treated as a suspect, and he asks her out for a drink. She rejects him and says it's not appropriate.
He then follows up and ask her out again, however, she rejects him again and spills a bottle of beer on his shorts when he doesn't take no for an answer. Following this he then makes a complaint to the Commissioner who approaches Mattie about it.
Mattie begins to doubt her job is at risk as she explains to Seb (Shaquille Ali-Yebuah)the Commissioner knows she "messed up" on a case in Jamaica, which explains her transfer to Saint Marie.
Then in tonight's final episode she begins to get calls from someone she seems to be avoiding and then at the end of the finale, the mysterious person calls Seb, who tells Mattie about her missed call.
She puts the guy's number in the bin and seems distressed. So what actually happened?
Well we'll have to officially wait for the answer to that when season 16 arrives, however fans have some theories.
Following episode five many viewers on Reddit theorised Mattie could have been in a relationship or had romantic involvement with a suspect, which of course would not be a wise decision as it would complicate matters hugely for any case.
One person said on the forum, "What with the Commissioner and Mattie's dialogue about her past in the theatre episode, I think that Mattie might've had some sort of fling with a prior murder suspect."
Another user replied to this, and agreed saying: "That's what I was thinking too. Given what we know so far, it would make sense for that to be the case too."
And it does make the most sense of what secret Mattie could be hiding. She seemed terrified about what could happen after the theatre actor made a complaint and seemed to imply the complaint was similar to what happened to her previously.
Ok, we're going to need season 16 to hurry up.
