Actor Anne Hathaway – best known for her roles in The Devil Wears Prada, The Princess Diaries and, more recently, WeCrashed – has opened up about her "complicated" feelings towards motherhood and how she hopes to break down the stigma surrounding fertility.

"I could see us going for another one," she said when asked about her plans for future children during an interview with the Wall Street Journal, before pointing out that although this is something she potentially wants, she's cautious that this isn't an easy journey.

"There's this tendency to portray getting pregnant, having kids, in one light, as if it’s all positive. But I know from my own experience… it's so much more complicated than that," she explained. "And when you find out that your pain is shared by others… I just feel that’s helpful information to have, so I’m not isolated in my pain," the actor added, referencing how for centuries women have been forced to deal with miscarriages and fertility issues alone.

"I mean, what is there to be ashamed of? This is grief, and that’s a part of life," she added.

This isn't the first time the 39-year-old has been open with her fans about the struggles that come with motherhood. Upon announcing her second pregnancy three years ago, the movie star told her followers on Instagram: "For everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies."

As for how being a mum has changed her, Hathaway admits the experience has transformed her life. "I didn’t feel fully landed and fully here until I was a mom," she told the WSJ. "It’s not like I was lacking integrity, but it made me want to be completely, on every level, true to my word. And that meant stopping any nonsense that I had going on inside myself. And it’s little breaks that you give yourself sometimes when you know that you’re not being your best self."

One impact that motherhood has had on the actor, is her decision to quit drinking. "I quit drinking back in October, for 18 years," she revealed in 2019. "I'm going to stop drinking while my son is in my house just because I don’t totally love the way I do it and he's getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings."
