The 'half-moon' nail trend is the new French manicure: 7 elegant ideas to try this spring

Take a classic and put it in reverse...

By

Nail trends come and go, but the French manicure is as close to timeless as it gets. Seasonal colours and intricate designs are inspiring, but whenever I find myself facing a dilemma, staring blankly at a salon wall overflowing with polishes, nine times out of ten? I'm asking for crisp, white tips.

Not only are they a failsafe option year-round, French tips effortlessly strike a balance between classic and contemporary (read: 'timeless', no, it doesn't mean 'dated'). Exhibit A: the 'half-moon' trend that's just entered our radars. Equal parts minimalistic and modern, this playful spin on traditional Frenchies is set to be the chic-est manicure for spring...

What is the 'half-moon' manicure?

Whether dubbed the 'half-moon', inverted or reversed French, celebrity manicurist and Mylee ambassador Tinu Bello says it "flips the script" on the iconic look – quite literally. "Instead of highlighting the tip of the nail, it focuses on the base (right around the cuticle), creating a crescent effect," explains Bello. "While nodding to that clean, French aesthetic, it instantly feels more current."

Why is it trending?

In the wake of spring, Bello has noticed a growing appetite for fresh, (subtly) experimental designs – even for mani minimalists. "Not only does the half-moon manicure feel elevated but wearable day-to-day, it works beautifully with the softer, brighter shades we naturally gravitate toward at this time of year."

How do I recreate the trend?

The beauty of the half-moon trend is its versatility – so anything from soft pastels and sheer pinks to milky whites and matcha greens will suit for spring, says Bello. "Or, if you want something a bit more statement-making, metallic accents, glitter shades or chrome finishes can look lovely," she adds.

While this design tends to shine on shorter natural nails and softly rounded shapes, the options are endless (Bello notes that it can also add a cool contrast to longer almond or oval nails).

1

Classic white

You won't actually have to stray too far out of your comfort zone to switch things up this spring. White tips get an instant update when painted as an accent at the base of the nail. The result is clean, refined and as wearable as ever.

2

Gold chrome

Half-moon, but make it metallic! Gold accents catch the light at every turn without feeling too OTT for the office, when paired with a natural, bubble bath-toned base.

Micro navy

Nail lovers will have spotted the 'micro-French' trend making waves at the beginning of 2026, defined by its ultra-fine lines. Combined with the half-moon, the result is easily recreated with a steady hand and a precise striping tool.

4

Butter yellow

More muted than neon yellow but cooler than pastel, butter yellow is the trend of all trends this spring – from homeware, to clothing, and now to nails. If you're nervous about embracing the shade all over, we get it. Look no further!

Pastel hues

Multi-coloured nails are easily made more grown-up when the inverted French design is at play. Branch out with a candyfloss-coloured base shade and lean into seasonal pinks, yellows, baby blues and lilacs.

6

Barely noir

Fact: a glossy terracotta base sits beautifully under sleek black stripes. This one's ideal for those who prefer a pared-back look using gels over a natural shape.

Silver cuffs

Gold chrome, but make it... silver? If you're after a super modern, almost futuristic vibe, a reflective cuff at the cuticle feels editorial. Finish with a high-shine top coat, et voila.
