With spring (and soon come summer) now in full swing, toes are officially back on public display – which means the annual scramble begins... sandal-feet at the ready!
The Russian manicure has been quietly building a cult following for its ultra-precise finish; however, its pedicure counterpart is now stepping into the spotlight. In summary, it's less about a quick buff-and-polish and more about an almost forensic-level of cuticle care.
Intrigued to know more? Cosmopolitan UK spoke to Juanita Huber-Millet, founder and creative director of Townhouse, to get the deets.
"A Russian manicure or pedicure is known for its highly detailed approach to cuticle work," Juanita says. "Traditionally, it uses an e-file to carefully refine the cuticle area and create a very clean, precise nail plate." In other words, your traditional mani but better!
The appeal, she explains, is control. "The goal is to allow colour to be applied as close to the cuticle as possible, giving that ultra-neat, long-lasting finish that grows out seamlessly."
Compared to gels or BIAB, the difference is less about polish and more about the prep. "With Russian techniques, there’s a much stronger focus on detailed cuticle work before any product is applied," Juanita explains. Townhouse, she adds, prefers this gentler philosophy: "We focus on expert manual cuticle work, without the use of drills. It’s about technique and control, rather than relying on tools."
Everyone's clicking on...
The result is a cleaner, more refined nail bed that prioritises nail health and safety – not just aesthetics.
And not only that, but when the preparation is done properly, Juanita tells us, the results can last longer. "The regrowth is less noticeable, and the overall look stays polished for longer," she says.
IDK about you, but we're booking an appointment as we speak!
That said, there is one caveat, and that's skill. "It’s a technique that requires a high level of skill and should always be carried out by a trained professional."
Essentially, the Russian pedicure technique is not just a pedicure; it's an investment in your nails – both aesthetically and (arguably) morally. Here's to prioritising nail health!
