I'm not proud to admit it, but I belong in the TikTok vortex: doomscrolling somewhere between Vinted hauls, "what I eat in a day" videos and nail inspo clips soundtracked by breathy house music. My screentime report should probably be referred to a parliamentary inquiry. But (!!) it does mean I can confidently claim to be in touch with the trends. And when it comes to nails, the runaway manicure of summer 2026 is unquestionably cat eye.
It's the kind of manicure that makes you suddenly start talking with your hands more; reaching for the card reader at dinner feels cinematic, and holding an iced latte becomes a full performance.
Now, if you've somehow avoided the TikTok spiral (you've probably got hobbies and a life, huh?), allow me to explain. The technique uses a magnetic gel polish filled with tiny metallic particles. Before curing the polish under a UV lamp, hold a magnet over the nail to pull the shimmer into shape, creating a luminous streak that shifts and catches the light as your hands move. The finished effect is glossy, expensive-looking, and impossible not to stare at, sitting at a mesmerising intersection somewhere between crushed velvet and liquid chrome.
Part of the appeal is that they look wildly high-maintenance while being surprisingly doable at home. All you need is a UV lamp, cat eye polish and a magnet! Though if you're not confident DIY'ing, the salon is always a safe bet and our first recommendation.
This summer, we're all for pearly lilacs, mismatched shades and polka dot-topped cat eye nails – all of which, I've, of course, included inspo pics below. Thank me later when the compliments start rolling in.
