As a self-proclaimed manicure fiend, I find sanctuary in the nail salon. For me, nothing beats the feeling of stepping out with a fresh, new set (then spending entire the journey home staring vainly at it). The only thing that eventually bursts my bubble is when I glance down a few weeks later, and notice the once glossy colour is dulled and my natural nail is shamelessly peeking out at the cuticle.

Regrowth is inevitable, but thankfully, there are options that are known to be a little more forgiving throughout the process. Think pared-back neutrals, subtle nudes and softly rounded shapes which feel seamless enough to match your natural nail tone and in turn, extend the lifespan of your manicure between appointments.

From soap nails and 'bubble bath' hues to micro-French designs, discover five of the best low-maintenance ideas to try below. Plus, some of our favourite at-home polishes, if you're going down the DIY route!

Best natural nail polishes

Soap nails

'Soap' sounds unconventional, but the trend speaks for itself. Having gained popularity towards the beginning of spring, soap nails are defined by their squeaky-clean, high-shine finish, typically over a sheer pink base. Call this the clean girl aesthetic in manicure form.

Micro-French

Traditional white tips have long been the go-to for those who prefer simple, elegant designs. But sleeker, ultra-fine lines are a modern take on the classic – and they're so subtle, growth will be near invisible after a few weeks.

Milky neutrals

Near-transparent washes of glossy cream, off-white and milky hues feel both sophisticated and wearable for everyday. Pair with a softly rounded almond shape, and it's the easiest way to achieve the 'your-nails-but-better' effect.

Bubble bath

Loyal fans of OPI will have known and loved the iconic 'Bubble Bath' shade – a polished, reflective light-pink shade that's led the mani minimalism movement since the early 2000s. It's known for being versatile (suiting every skin tone) and long-lasting (read: chip-proof).

Ombré BIAB

BIAB (or Builder-In-A-Bottle) is an innovative soak-off gel formula designed to support natural nails – particularly when regular salon trips and re-application leaves them brittle and weary. The technique lasts longer than traditional gels (often up to four weeks), making it ideal for those with hectic schedules hoping to stretch time between appointments.
