With all the drama going on in the YouTube beauty community it's easy to forget what made us originally fall in love with the platform.

Thankfully some people out there are still doing makeup tutorials and one of my personal favourite recent discoveries is professional makeup artist, Robert Welsh.

If you're a beauty addict like me, you may have seen Robert's videos pop up on your homepage, as he has become known for 'reacting' to famous YouTubers makeup routines.

Don't get him confused with a drama channel though, Robert's reaction videos purely focus on makeup techniques. Pointing out application methods beauty gurus and celebrities could improve on and explaining why.

After watching more of his videos in one sitting than I'd like to admit, there is one critique I've noticed Robert gives in almost every single video, and it's one I'm guilty of myself.

To all the people that use eyeshadow primer on a daily basis, you're now excused from this chat. Those of you that prep your eyes with concealer please remain seated.

In one of his most recent videos, "Doing my makeup using techniques I hate round 2!" Robert explained precisely why you need to stop using your Tarte Shape Tape, or whatever concealer you use, to prime your eyelids.

"The skin under your eyes is so different to the skin on your eyelids," he began. Before showing how the concealer was already creasing, before he'd even applied eyeshadow.

According to Robert this is because concealer doesn't block the oil that eyelids produce, not only that but most concealers will already have some kind of oil in the formula to begin with, meaning you're simply adding oil to an already greasy situation.

I'll be the first to admit that I've gotten lazy and have ditched my eyeshadow primer in favour of concealer, but I thought it would be fine because I then set the concealer on my lids with my face powder.

However, according to Robert that's the equivalent of two atrocities.

"This is what we do on our faces (set with powder), but again, eyelid skin is completely different," he explained.

While I thought the powder would help stop my eyeshadow creasing, Robert says all you're doing is creating a "silky texture that's going to be horrible to blend on top of".

Brilliant, well done me.

So basically, yes, an eyeshadow primer really is worth it and while yes it might seem like another step in your routine, it's one that will keep your shadow on all day thanks to it's oil-blocking properties.

The worst thing of all... I knew this already, I just got lazy. Looks like I'll be stocking up on my favourite eyeshadow primer immediately then.
