As a beauty writer, I know the lane of designer perfume love all too well. That intoxicating glow that feels like you've bottled cold, hard cash and sprinkled it behind your ears. But here's the scandal: you don't actually need to take out a mortgage or sell your kidney to smell great. Enter: M&S's Pink Pepper, the high street's wink nudge to affordable scent.

Before even removing the cap, the perfume is marketed as an oriental floral with white floral, citrus and soft spicy being its main accords. And right out of the bottle, you're hit with said scent – and it's one that smells straight out of a regal château garden. In other words, notes-wise, the most prominent are pink pepper, jasmine, bergamot, orange blossom, amber, musk, vanilla and cedar, which together give the fragrance a subtle kick, followed by a warm, sweet linger that lasts for hours.

It's got, in equal parts, just enough gourmand warmth and flirtatious pink pepper spice.

While I would wear this frolicking through the citrus groves of a Southern French village, the scent is also perfect for day-to-night transitions – and more realistically, when you're at the office or meeting friends for after-work cocktails. So there's no need to splash the cash on a daytime and evening fragrance, it works for both (that is, unless you're feeling boujee, ofc).

In terms of longevity, this scent is formulated as an eau de toilette (AKA, it technically shouldn't last as long on the skin as an eau de parfum due to the lesser amount of oil in it); however, we would beg to differ. Of course, like any beauty product, it requires a re-spritz after hours – just like you reapply lipstick. But for its price point, that's less flaw and more feature.

Now, let's be real: This perfume is hailed as a dupe for the iconic Lancôme La Vie Est Belle 50ml, £97, but are the claims true? Do they actually smell alike? Well, for a tenner fragrance from a high street stalwart, yes – in the way that a perfectly brewed bottle of supermarket iced coffee gives 'third-wave artisan' vibes. The DNA isn't identical, but the vibe definitely gives La Vie Est Belle’s little sister.

Still not convinced? (How could you not be?!) Read some standout glowing customer reviews below:

"This smells delicious and is an exceptional dupe. Would definitely recommend."
"I absolutely love this scent. It's a great price which means i can afford to smell wonderful every day"
"I was given 3 of these eau de toilette bottles in different fragrances. I like the pink pepper smell the best. It has a subtle smell without being flowery and overpowering. So I ordered the larger bottle. It's great for everyday use."
"Good affordable perfume. Delicate floral fragrance, simple design of packaging, recyclable"
"This eau de toilette smells amazing, spicy but light, and whilst it's not paticularly long lasting, its noticeable for several hours and is a great buy for the price in my opinion."
"An absolute dupe for one of my favourite fragrances! Perfect for everyday wear or as a little something light and floral."

In an era where everything (rent, matcha lattes and anything that involves stepping outside your front door TBH) feels increasingly out of reach, it's comforting to know M&S isn't pricing us out of olfactory pleasure! Here's to smelling good great!
