Here at The Cosmopolitan Black Beauty Hub, we absolutely do not gatekeep, so when we get a chance to quiz some of our favourite Black women about their go-to beauty products, tips and treatments, we don't hold back – after all, that's how our Little Black Beauty Book franchise was born. All the tea on our favourite star's life in beauty, served hot.

This week, we caught up with model and Love Island alum, Uma Jammeh, who shared everything from her favourite skincare product to her biggest beauty splurge.

What does Black beauty mean to you?

Black beauty feels limitless to me. It’s innovation, culture and individuality all at once. Growing up, I think there were moments where beauty felt very one-size-fits-all, whereas now I love seeing Black women embracing every version of themselves, whether that’s through skin, hair, makeup or style. There’s so much richness and creativity in it. It feels powerful, expressive and constantly evolving.

Favourite skin/beauty treatment?

Skin is everything for me, and honestly, keeping it hydrated and looked after is the best treatment. I’ve realised makeup always sits differently when your skin is healthy and glowing underneath. I’m definitely more focused on skin health now than covering things up.

Any recs for places for aesthetic procedures?

I believe in enhancing your natural beauty because that’s the most special thing about you, but ultimately, do what makes you happy and what makes you feel confident. I’m really intentional with anything beauty-related, and I always think the practitioner matters more than trends. I’d always recommend finding facialists or specialists who truly understand different skin tones and textures.

What’s your wash-day routine?

Wash day is definitely a ritual for me. I always start with a clarifying shampoo if I’ve had product or styling build-up, then I love using the L’Oréal Elvive Glycolic Gloss treatment because I’m obsessed with how glossy and healthy it makes my hair look. If I’m keeping it simple, I focus on hydration, oils and making sure my hair gets a break after lots of glam and styling.

Go to hair salon/hairdresser?

I’ve become really loyal to hair because once you find people who truly understand your hair, you don’t let them go. I love people who prioritise healthy hair first and style second. My hunnies, Jay Birmingham and Harold Casey, are incredible and just get it.

Have you had any bad hair experiences, and if so, how did that feel?

Definitely. I think a lot of women with textured hair have had moments where they’ve sat in a chair and realised someone wasn’t experienced with their hair type. Hair is such a personal part of your identity, so it can feel really uncomfortable. Last year, I had light brown hair and wanted to go lighter, and I rushed into the decision. Unfortunately, I went to someone who wasn’t experienced with my hair and ended up with damaged hair and a yellow tone right before a really important event. I definitely learned that healthy hair and patience always come first.

Skincare product you can’t live without?

A really good SPF. Once you start understanding skincare properly, you realise protection is non-negotiable. Skin always looks best when you’re thinking long term. I also love a really rich moisturiser. I swear by Weleda Skin Food because the second my skin gets dry.

Body treatment you love?

Lymphatic drainage massages. Especially when you travel a lot or have fittings, events and long shoot days. I always leave feeling lighter, refreshed and more like myself afterwards. I love it.

Your biggest beauty splurge?

Fragrance. I fully believe scent becomes part of your identity, and I love discovering fragrances that feel like memories. I adore Guerlain Mitsouko; it's my signature scent.

Cheapest beauty obsession?

The L’Oréal Infallible Setting Mist. It’s a staple and honestly performs better than some of the expensive ones I’ve tried. It feels luxurious at an affordable price and really locks everything in.

Makeup mishap memories?

That’s a secret I’ll never tell. All photographic evidence has mysteriously disappeared.

Your makeup bag wouldn’t be the same without…

Lip products. Always. YSL; I just love them, everything is just 10/10. A lip combo changes everything. Even if I’m barely wearing makeup, once my lips are done, I instantly feel more put together. I adore YSL Beauty Kiss Shaper Sienna Rebel. I also love Dior Beauty Backstage Rosy Glow Stick in Cherry.
