At long last, Olivia Rodrigo’s third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is here, and as expected, it is chock-full of bangers. And while most of the songs seem to be inspired by her two-year relationship with actor Louis Partridge (please see: “drop dead,” “cigarette smoke,” “u + me = <3,” etc.), the inspiration for her track “my way” is less clear. So…who are the “my way” lyrics about? Let’s discuss the theories.

When asked about the inspiration for “my way” on the Popcast podcast, Olivia said, “I was just really in the heat of the moment writing it, and that’s how it is. Sometimes you’re like, ‘I really need to get this out and I’m fucking pissed.’ Maybe it isn’t the most evolved thing ever to say, but I really loved this song and I loved the way it turned out.”

She continued, “I was going through some Gwen Stefani vibes in there. But, yeah, I really loved that song. The album isn’t very angry at all, and I think that’s the angry touchstone, but I’m really proud of it. I stand by it.”

But who is the revenge track about? In “my way,” Olivia seemingly calls out another woman for interfering in her relationship, noting how “you send him another poem and think that hе’ll let me go” and “you’re posting another pic in clothes that I know are his.”

And while Liv will likely never confirm who this song is actually about, fans have a theory that it could be about Sydney Chandler, who dated Louis after meeting him on the set of the FX miniseries Pistol in 2021.

The two reportedly split in August 2023, and by the end of the year, Louis was sparking dating rumors with Olivia.

Oh, and as a reminder: Some Livies thought that Olivia’s 2023 track “obsessed” could possibly be about Sydney, too (mostly due to the choppy micro-bangs she rocked for the music video, which came out in 2024).

But again, Liv has made it clear that she will never name names when it comes to the inspo behind her songs, so take all this ^^ with a grain of salt!
