Haunted Houses

Just like previous years, Halloween Horror Nights 34 brought us 10 new houses to explore. Five of them are based off existing IPs: Fallout, Five Nights at Freddy's, Friday the 13th, Terrifier, and The Wyatt Sicks from WWE. There are also five original houses, some of which continue some of the lore previously seen in past HHNs, giving longtime fans new and exciting stories to discover! The following is our personal ranking of houses:

1. El Artista: A Spanish Haunting

Halloween Horror Nights fans know that they are in for a treat when they hear that a house was designed by none other than Dylan Kollath. The scenic designer, who is behind arguably one of the most stunning houses of all time like Dead Man's Pier: Winter's Wake, is back with another breathtaking house that is not only incredible to look at, but also brings some of the best scares in the park as you follow Sergio Navarro's slow decent into madness. Kollath uses the beauty of the house to distract you as you walk toward surprising scares, leaving you absolutely mesmerized.

2. Gálkn: Monsters of the North

Not only does a cold house help you absolutely beat the heat, but it also usually is a sign of another masterpiece. This time, legendary monsters and demons have come out of the shadows as they are awoken from the dead. The townspeople have tried to flee and failed, but can you survive the ever growing beast that is taking over?

3. WWE Presents: The Horrors of the Wyatt Sicks

There was some fear before going into this house that we just...wouldn't get it. While WWE is a giant IP, the Wyatt Sicks is still a pretty new concept within its grand history and there are many other legends that you would think would go first. But then you hear about the late Bray Wyatt's love for HHN and you walk through the house and it all makes sense. Not only it is a beautiful tribute to Wyatt's characters, but it offers some very unique moments that new and old fans of HHN won't get enough of.

4. Jason Un1v3rse

Last year's Insidious: The Further team got back together to create another incredible house, this time following none other than Jason from the Friday the 13th franchise. Follow the evolution of one of the greatest horror icons as you travel to his home and Camp Crystal Lake. This house brings in the scares in surprising ways, making it a heart-pounding hell of time as you walk through. Just when you think you're safe, you better think again...

5. Five Nights at Freddy's

While we absolutely love the scares that come with every house, there are some that are just a campy good time and FNAF absolutely brings that vibe this year. Considering how young a lot of its fanbase is, it's not too surprising to see the scares turned down for a house like this one, but the real surprise from the animatronics that come to life as you step into Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Created with Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the animatronics are just another unique way to make HHN fresh and exciting. Can you survive the night?

6. Terrifier

I have to admit, this was the house this year that I had to work myself up to doing. I managed to survive the smells and horrors of Exorcist: Believer two years ago, so this shouldn't have been so bad, right? Oh, how wrong I was... This is everything dialed up a 10: the smells, the visuals, the water that sprays you if you decide to exit through the wet path (ponchos are for sale right outside the house). It is not for the faint of heart or those with weak stomachs, but what you get in return is a gruesome, disgusting, and incredible tribute to a wild and deadly clown that so rightfully deserves it.

7. Dolls: Let's Play Dead

Some of my fellow scare squad members were surprised at me ranking the next three houses so low and it honestly surprised me too. The thing is that they are both incredible works, it is just a tough year with so many great houses that it makes the ranking so hard. This house is so fun and campy, bringing along some solid scares and incredible use of smells. Dolls: Let's Play Dead also gives us some fun guest activated triggers that you definitely want to be on the lookout for! Hint: there's one in the photo below.

8. Grave of Flesh

Another house with incredible use of smells and a unique premise where you and your body face against flesh eaters who are coming for your body after your funeral. The premise is actually pretty incredible with some fantastic visuals all around, however, it doesn't quite reach those high levels that we've seen in the previous houses. I do believe that our wonderful RIP Tour guide might have overhyped the scares a bit, leaving me wanting more. Nevertheless, it has everyone you want from an HHN house and is a great addition to this list.

9. Hatchet & Chains: Bounty Hunters

Slaughterhouse Sinema 2 was one of my favorite houses last year, so I was excited to see one of the featured films from there being featured. It's a house with some solid scares, great costumes and designs, but feels like it moves on too quickly for its own good. It's similar to some houses that we've seen in previous years, which is not entirely a bad thing, but doesn't give us the surprises that we usually live for when it comes to great houses like this.

10. Fallout

Oh, Fallout... Before I went to HHN, I raved about how excited I was to see this IP turned into a house. And while seeing The Ghoul in person was very exciting (*tucks hair behind ear*), it is not what we were expecting when it came to this. Those who are unfamiliar with the IP did not get to see Lucy in all her glory as her character was only limited to two different lines, one of them said multiple times throughout various parts throughout the house. The scares weren't really there either, unfortunately, making you feel like you're walking through a dark museum than an actual house. I will admit, it was cool to walk through the vault and get the ultimate clue into season 2 of Fallout, but that's still not enough to save it from being at the bottom of our list.

Scare Zones, Activations, and Shows

In a surprise twist, this year's HHN only includes 4 scare zones (The Origins of Horror, Masquerade: Dance With Death, The Catlady of Crooked Lane, and Mutations: Toxic Twenties), but adds in two new experiences: Mel's Die-In Zombies and Club Horror. The Catlady of Cooked Lane is absolutely incredible and definitely feels like a complete and elevated zone. Masquerade is fun and has some of the most stunning costumes this year. Mel's Die-In finally gets it moment to shine with roller skating zombies that make for a good time in the iconic venue.

Oh, and you can see Art the Clown floating around the park—we saw him at Club Horror dancing to Justin Bieber's "Beauty and the Beat" with an axe while wearing a Santa costume—so keep an eye out for any other fun moments with him. Just remember: give scare actors some space!

Don't forget to make time for the very hot and sexy Nightmare Fuel: Circus of Decay. It was my first time finally catching the show after years of going to HHN and now is a must-do on my list. And returning for many years is the Haunt-O-Phonic: A Ghoulish Journey water show by the Studio Lagoon that is perfect for younger fans!

The Tribute Store has also moved this year (likely due to the de-construction of Rip Ride Rockit) to the Arcade by the Revenge of the Mummy coaster. It is significantly bigger than previous years and the perfect place the grab your merch. Look up as you walk in to see special paintings featuring some familiar faces and you can also pick up your Deathly Afraid necklace if you don't want scare actors to come and scare you in the scare zones (they do not work in the houses, so don't even think about it).

Food & Drinks

Listen, we really tried to eat and drink everything this HHN had to offer, but there are some quests that are just only for the bravest few. That being said, we did get to try the Freddy Fazbear pizza with spaghetti and meatballs on top from Five Night's at Freddy's and it is truly a highlight of the night. The elotes are soooo good, albeit, not the easiest to walk around with. And the Fallout Yum Yum Deviled Eggs will absolutely fool you with how they look, since they make the perfect dessert. (Coconut panna cotta filled with Chamoy pineapple bits and topped with mango topping and Tajin.)

Don't forget to end the night with a drink at your hotel bar with a specialty drink. Some hotels have specialty menus and items that you can only get at HHN, so make sure to try one before you say goodbye to the parks!
