When A Toxic Love Story landed on Netflix, viewers were gripped by the retelling of one of the most twisted wrongful arrest cases in US history. At the centre of the nightmare was Michelle Hadley, a Californian woman whose life was turned upside down overnight when she was framed by her ex-fiancé, Ian Diaz, and his new wife, Angela.
Here is everything you need to know about Michelle Hadley, how she was exonerated, and where she is today.
Who is Michelle Hadley?
Michelle Hadley is the central victim in the case highlighted in Netflix’s A Toxic Love Story. Living in Southern California, Michelle was previously engaged to US Deputy Marshal Ian Diaz, but after their engagement ended in 2015, the pair were involved in a messy dispute over property that they co-owned.
Michelle has since alleged that Ian's behaviour became increasingly controlling during their relationship, something she discusses in A Toxic Love Story.
Shortly after their split, Ian met and married Angela (also known as Ashley).
Unbeknownst to Michelle, she would soon become the target of an elaborate, life-destroying conspiracy engineered by the newlyweds, in an apparent bid to end the property dispute and seek revenge.

Why was Michelle Hadley arrested?
In mid-2016, Michelle was accused of mounting a terrifying campaign of cyberstalking, harassment, and death threats against Ian and Angela Diaz. The harassment culminated in fake Craigslist 'rape fantasy' adverts posted online, which invited strange men to Angela's home to perform violent sexual acts, claiming Angela was "playing along" as part of a roleplay.
Law enforcement initially believed Michelle was sending the threatening emails and placing the ads, and as a result she was arrested and charged with multiple serious felonies, including attempted forcible rape and stalking.
Terrifyingly, she faced a potential life sentence in prison and had to spend 88 days in jail while awaiting trial, as she was unable to raise the bail money needed to secure her release.
How was Michelle Hadley proven innocent?
While Michelle languished in prison, investigators and her own legal team began taking a closer look at the digital paper trail.
Digital forensic evidence revealed massive inconsistencies:
- IP addresses linked the fake email accounts and Craigslist posts directly back to Ian and Angela's condo and personal devices.
- Security footage proved an alleged physical attack reported by Angela never happened.
- It emerged that Ian and Angela were sending threatening messages to themselves to frame Michelle.
In October 2016, Michelle was released from custody. By January 2017, prosecutors dropped all charges against her and officially exonerated her of all wrongdoing. Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said he wanted to ensure Michelle was "cleared in every possible way – in the courtroom and in the court of public opinion", adding: "It should be clear in the media and in cyberspace. Ms Hadley is an innocent victim of a diabolical scheme."
Speaking outside court after the charges were dismissed, Michelle said: "This has been a huge nightmare for me... probably the most traumatic experience of my life."
Did Michelle Hadley receive compensation?
Yes. Following her total exoneration, Michelle filed civil lawsuits in federal court against the City of Anaheim, the Anaheim Police Department, and her accusers, citing wrongful arrest, false imprisonment, and police misconduct.
In 2021, Michelle reached an undisclosed settlement with the City of Anaheim over her wrongful arrest and imprisonment.
Where is Michelle Hadley now?
Since her nightmare ended, Michelle has chosen to keep a relatively private life, but in the aftermath of her exoneration, she did give select TV interviews, including on NBC's TODAY show, where she described the harrowing experience of being jailed as her "worst nightmare come true." Since her ordeal, she has also welcomed a daughter, who arrived on a poignant day; the date Ian was convicted.
Through her participation in Netflix's A Toxic Love Story, Michelle continues to share her story on her own terms, helping to shed light on how cyber-manipulation can compromise justice and how she fought to rebuild her life.
"I'm going back into school, I'm going back to work and I started dating again," she says in the documentary. "Eventually, I find out I'm pregnant. Raising this beautiful little girl is my fairytale ending.
"I'm not a princess, but I get to be the hero in my own story."
