Why did the chicken cross the road...? Honestly, Puerto Ricans might have invented this joke. Chickens roam freely here, strutting around like they own the place and, in a way, they do. Fun fact: in Puerto Rico, chickens are seen as symbols of courage, inspired by the island’s long-standing cockfighting tradition, as cockerels fight to the death.

If you’re an animal lover, this loud and proud island is certainly for you. Think lizards, parrots, manatees, turtles, dolphins, and whatever else decides to casually appear like it’s part of the itinerary. There's plenty of wildlife here, woven into everyday life.

Drenched in hot, golden sunshine, the island genuinely has everything. With over 300 beaches, lush mountain jungles, cascading waterfalls, and a lively salsa scene, where do you even start?!

Oh, and piña coladas were literally invented here. So yes, sampling and comparing them is a requirement. Every drink becomes a competitive sport. “This one’s creamier” or “this one's ruined my ability to ever enjoy cocktails back home.” It’s all research, very important research.

Expect culture, chaos (the fun kind), seafood, and scenery to make your camera roll work overtime. From the cobbled colonial streets of Old San Juan to hidden jungle waterfalls and endless stretches of sand, it’s the kind of place that makes you think, “actually, I could just stay here forever.”

Trust me, you’ll catch yourself salsa dancing in the street with the chickens, piña colada in hand. It's blissful.

Where to stay

Palacio Provincial

Serving historic charm and rooftop pool selfies. This stylishly restored 19th-century building is right in the middle of everything, so you can roll out of bed and straight into your aesthetic travel content era. Bonus: the rooftop serves fabulous views over San Juan Bay. Breakfast is served on a cute outdoor patio, steeped in gorgeous green flora.

El Oasis

A soft reset in the mountains. It’s honestly giving The White Lotus level luxury, minus the suspicious deaths. Think luscious jungle, total peace and quiet, and pretending you’ve gone off-grid while quietly uploading one million Instagram stories. The furniture is all hand made and vintage, locally sourced. The rustic visuals have been curated with the utmost care.

It’s eco-friendly, zero-waste, and feels main character luxe. The vibe? Romanticising your life while doing absolutely nothing. Just you, a book you won’t read, and a ridiculously bountiful tropical backdrop.

At night, you fall asleep to the coquí: a tiny tree frog that basically becomes your personal white noise machine, chirping you into a very aesthetic natures lullaby slumber.

And the on-site restaurant Ylang Ylang? Genuinely dangerous. I ordered tuna with malay, a local Caribbean fruit, and would thoroughly recommend.

Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort, San Juan

Your final-night “I’m not ready to leave” location. Beachfront, close to the airport (sad), and ideal for one last dip in the warm glistening ocean. The beach is a more private vibe. It's also a protected turtle breeding ground. Set your alarm early for a chance to spot them hatching! Warning: you will contemplate quitting your job and staying here forever.

What to do

Coffee & Waterfalls in Ciales

Explore the rainforest with a mountain coffee tour. It feels like stepping into a wildly green caffeinated fairytale. The kind where everything is lush, slightly surreal, and you suddenly believe you could live off the land (You probably couldn't, but it’s nice to imagine).

Visit Fin Cafe, a family-run coffee farm/tree house. They sell their coffee straight out of the tree canopy. Confidently nod along, pretend to understand tasting notes. Sip ginger and honey coffee that’s so earthy and rich it feels medicinal.

Then it’s straight into waterfall-chasing mode, living out your full tropical music video fantasy. It’s wholesome and ridiculously scenic.

Bad Bunny’s album Debí Tirar Más Fotos was inspired by the heritage and culture of Puerto Rico’s mountain communities. So if you’re a fan of this super sexy rapper man, you’re quite literally walking through the roots of his inner world.

Everything grows here: we’re talking ginger, turmeric, avocado, almond, banana, plantain, coconut... the lot. Puerto Rico is also proudly home to 87 different varieties of mango alone.

West Coast beach hopping & surfing in Isabela

Enjoy a full day of beach-to-beach behaviour: swim, tan, snack, repeat. Every stop on the beach hop tour is prettier than the last. Some beaches are untouched paradises where it’s just you and your thoughts, while others bring party energy. Beach bars, buzzing cafés, and loud Latino music setting the vibe. (The beach hop tour guides are such good sports; they record you jumping off the pier with an underwater GoPro. 10/10 Instagram skills.)

Then it’s time to surf. A private pro lesson means you’ll attempt to stand up before immediately wiping out. It's worth it though, for that one Instagram pic. Even if surfing isn't your thing, the ocean shows off. It's hard not to be impressed when you swim out and see a turtle and tropical fish beneath you. The water is crystal clear and abundant with life. You’re in a real-life aquarium. I was quite content watching the pros surf around me, as I gawked at sea-life.

Cheese-making in Hatillo

At Vaca Negra, you’ll learn about artisanal cheese and suddenly become the type of person who says things like “notes of nuttiness.” After a cheese tasting session accompanied by wine, you'll make your own cheese with fresh whey and spices, aged and shipped to your home address.

Explore Old San Juan & Santurce

Wander through the colourful streets of San Juan on a historical walking tour, visiting all the old forts (educational yet scenic), then head over to the Santurce art district for graffiti that slaps unnecessarily hard. Expect historical culture mixed with modern day.

Where to eat and drink

Alcapurria Quema

Head to La Placita Square for your afternoon. It's full of bars and eateries. It's where Bad Bunny was live streamed to the masses, millions of locals piled in to watch his residency, street party style. Expect local comfort food like mofongo, guava dips, alcapurrias platain fritters with acerola Caribbean cherry. Basically, locally sourced fresh fried seafood served with zingy lime and octopus salad. Everything tastes like a good decision.

Pa’l Monte, Rincón

Traditional Puerto Rican food, but elevated. All served in an outdoor tree-house patio, you dine amongst the canopy. It’s giving heritage, depth, and flavours that make you pause mid-bite. All the recipes are inherited lovingly from the chef's grandmother. Lot's of passion and storytelling went into each plate. (It was the best restaurant experience I had on the Island, I'm still thinking about it.) Final dinner energy: a menu that says “we’re ending on a high note.”

Final thoughts

This trip was less a holiday and more a personality upgrade (with a rigorous amount of vitamin D.) Between forrest hikes, beaches, and seafood so fresh it could slap you across the face, Puerto Rico is basically a tropical wellness retreat… with elite rum cocktails.

  • Pack light: you’ll be sweaty 24/7. It’s part of the experience. Lean in. Glowy skin era activated. You won't sit quietly, you'll frolic.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle and a sense of adventure. One minute you’re sipping coffee in Old San Juan, the next you’re standing under a waterfall questioning your entire life back home.
  • Eat everything. I mean it. From roadside snacks to elevated dining. If it’s on a plate, it’s about to change your life. I’m still thinking about that malay fruit.
  • Prepare for the coquí soundtrack. These little tree frogs will sing you to sleep every night, nature’s own lullaby. At first you’re like “what the hell is that?!” Then you can’t sleep without it.
  • Nights out? Not optional. Whether it’s cocktails in Old San Juan or dancing somewhere you didn’t plan to end up, the energy is high.

You'll leave convinced you could move here, open a beach bar, and “start fresh.” (Give it 48 hours before making any major life decisions.)
