Manchester, often described as "the capital of the North", is a city rich in culture. It is, in equal parts, a media and music hub, culinary hotspot, and LGBT haven. In fact, it can be hard to whittle down your favourites list on Google Maps, for the place is teeming with incredible bars, restaurants, music venues, galleries... I could go on!

It's also a city made up of neighbourhoods, all with their own distinct character. The Northern quarter, Gay Village, and Spinningfields are but a few areas you could explore during your time there. And explore you must! Each district is so unique and vibrant and will provide something that the others simply can't. Head to the Northern quarter for a spot of thrifting and some great coffee, then pop over to Deansgate for some high-quality cocktails.

Whether you're on a solo weekend getaway, travelling for work, or hitting the town for a hen do, these are some of our favourite places in Manchester, so you won't be lost when searching for the next place to see.

Where to stay

The Midland

Dating back to 1903, it’s no surprise The Midland feels steeped in history. The Edwardian building is staggering to take in, and the inside is no different. Think: vast open spaces, tall ceilings, and huge windows that let so much light into the rooms. When I was there, I saw a hen party or two, and the main reception space was closed one evening for an event, so it seems like *the* hotel to book if you’re looking for a truly unique and grand space for your special occasion. The spa is also not to be missed! I’m talking swing chairs, meditation areas, and bespoke treatments to suit everyone.

    The Lowry

The Lowry is located a little more North, above the River Irwell, but just cross Trinity Bridge and you’ll be in the action in no time, especially when it comes to nightlife. The Lowry feels super polished and clean, and the breakfast is a *must*. A great option for a quick weekend break or work trip. No frills, no surprises, just huge, modern rooms that cater to every need and budget.

      Stock Exchange

While it's a little more taxing on the wallet, this 5-star hotel is worth the price tag IMO. What used to be the Royal Stock Exchange, this grand hotel now takes its place and couldn’t be in a more central location. Right in the midst of the shopping district and in walking distance of the Northern quarter, everything you could possibly need is right on your doorstep. However, I’m sure you won’t want to stray far from your hotel room where you'll be treated like royalty from the moment you step through the doors.

        Treehouse Hotel

Following a successful debut last year, the Treehouse Hotel in Manchester will soon be opening a brand new 14th floor. The new floor has panoramic views and boasts elevated dining and accommodation experiences. New event spaces have also been created, so if you’re looking for somewhere to host a special do, as well as get some much-needed shut-eye, then the Treehouse is your answer.

          What to do

          Afflecks

Affleck’s is a Manchester must-do. The multi-story indoor market is full of everything you could possibly imagine: crystal shops, jewellery shops, tarot readers, clothes vendors - the list goes on! Allow yourself a decent chunk of time to wander from stall to stall, floor to floor, and see what kind of mysteries you can immerse yourself in. You never know, you might just end up with a new outlook on life (or a new piercing - they're basically the same thing).

Best for: finding a hidden gem

            Northern Quarter

This is likely where you’ll end up spending most of your time. The place is jam-packed with great bars, cafes, and shops. You could easily spend morning til evening hopping from cafe to charity shop to record store to sandwich bar and have barely walked 100 yards. Just be careful, your wallet might hate you after!

              Best for: thrifting

              The Warehouse Project

It’s likely most of the nation has made the journey to Manchester at least once to experience The Warehouse Project. Its international acclaim precedes itself, with DJs from around the globe having played at the prestigious venue. If you’re into music at all, especially of the electronic variety, then the WHP will no doubt have an event coming up that you’ll want to nab tickets for.

                Unitom

For lovers of literature (and cute prints), Unitom is a gorgeous shop stacked full of unique titles and quirky art. A great stop in the Northern Quarter, and it's right next to the famous Get Baked so you can grab yourself a slice of Bertha chocolate cake to reward all your hard shopping efforts after.

                Mixology Masterclass

If you’re here with your girls, on a hen do, or just really love cocktails (guilty!), then a mixology masterclass will be right up your street. With options to learn how to make either two or three cocktails, The Anthologist will host your group and walk you through all the tips and tricks to create some of your favourite tipples.

                  Chotto Matte

A great birthday spot! The rooftop gives unparalleled views of the city, and if it’s a special occasion I’d recommend booking just before the sun sets so you can dine watching the sky changing colour. The staff are super attentive and the food is just as good as the 180 degree views. Expect loud music and a live DJ, so maybe not the best environment for an intimate date night, but definitely a great space to take a big group and have a bit of a boogie after dinner.

                    Sticks n’ Sushi

A brand that never fails to disappoint, no matter what city you’re in, Sticks n' Sushi does Japanese food so well. Their spaces are always elevated and refined, making it the coolest environment to dine in. Their menu is extensive, and great for sharing, making it ideal for bigger groups - order the lot and tuck in between you!

                      El Gato

Without a doubt, some of the best tapas I’ve had in the UK. Every dish that came out was a flavour sensation. It seems Manchester is clued up on this place too, as when we left, most tables were full, so I’d definitely book ahead!

                        Erst

Manchester's food scene is vast and varied, with people travelling from across the country to dine at some of its establishments. Erst is one of those places. Having earned a place on the Michelin guide and been consistently recommended by top chefs, expect the small plates menu to change with the seasons, and the wines to be all-natural. A great choice for a special occasion.

                          Onda Pasta Bar

Onda is a super sexy date night spot. Expect great cocktails and even better pasta - fresh, with a good chew, and insanely flavoursome. One word of warning? The portions are fairly small, but this just means you have room for the must-order tiramisu (made famous from their tiramisu drawer, which went viral on TikTok!).

A highly popular brunch spot in Manchester, with queues outside both establishments. They pass quickly, though, and it’s worth standing around for. It’s a great ambience inside with constant chatter and bustling servers. A great place for a catch-up with friends!

If you’re staying at The Midland, this is a great spot for your morning coffee. Right outside the hotel, it offers a range of artisan drinks, plus a great brunch offering. Think all the classics (avocado toast, eggs royale, the lot!), and executed really well. It’s always bustling and ideal for all occasions, whether you want a sweet treat as you read your book by the large windows or a sit-down yap-sesh with your girls over some sourdough toast.

                                  Tabitha’s

While you will have to queue since this matcha bar has gone viral, just know it’s worth the wait. Their list of special drinks is innovative and flavoursome, although much more suited to those of us with a sweet tooth. All their standard coffees are also standout and they have a couple of toasties on the menu if you’re in need of a quick bite, too.
