Especially given Cancer Research UK reports that skin cancer cases are rising, with malignant melanoma (the most serious form) hitting a record high of nearly 21,000 annual diagnoses.
Most commonly caused by excessive UV exposure from the sun or sunbeds, around 9 in 10 melanoma cases are preventable. And there's really no excuse, considering there are more ways than ever to protect your skin. Namely, UPF clothing.
Ultraviolet Protection Factor (more commonly referred to as UPF) clothing is specially engineered fabric designed to shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. By tightly weaving the material and often treating it with UV-absorbing technology, UPF is then assigned a number rating that reflects how efficient it is in preventing sun damage.
For example, a regular cotton t-shirt has a UPF of around 5, dropping to 3 when wet. Compare that to a UPF 50+ rating, which is highly effective, blocking 98% of solar rays.
While there are specialist brands dedicated to creating UPF clothing, the technology is also reaching the high street, with Uniqlo offering a range of budget-friendly, accessible UV protection layers.
