Fantasy fans, we're in luck because Avatar: The Last Airbender just dropped on Netflix and we've explained the fiery ending to the highly-anticipated live-action series.
Based on the original Nickelodeon anime, the Netflix adaptation follows Aang, the young Avatar, as he learns to master the four elements – Water, Earth, Fire, Air – to restore balance to a world threatened by the terrifying Fire Nation.
So, do Aang, Katara, Sokka and the rest of the gaang survive the attacks by the Fire Nation? Get your air bending skills at the ready, because here is the ending of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender explained.
The Water Tribe battle the Fire Nation
In the final episode, the battle between the Fire Nation and Northern Water Tribe, which is home to Sokka, Katara and many others, rages on. To save the Tribe, Aang risks his life by harnessing the power of the ocean spirit.
Now in beast-like form, Aang is able to defeat the Fire Nation through the spirit's power and with Princess Yue's help, they bring some peace back to the Water Tribe.
Princess Yue sacrifices herself
During the battle, Princess Yue thanks Sokka for protecting her and kisses him. She then reveals that as a child, she was touched by the Moon Spirit meaning she has its life within her.
So, after Commander Zhao attacked the Moon during the battle, she said it was time to the Moon its life back so sacrifices herself to save the water benders.
Princess Azula attacks the Earth Kingdom
But, we soon learn that the battle was merely a distraction as Fire Lord Ozai really wanted to attack the Earth Kingdom.
So, while the battle was taking place, Ozai's daughter and Zuko's sister, Princess Azula, takes over the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu and their forces take Aang’s old friend, King Bumi, as a prisoner.
Upon learning about Ozai's plan from Commander Zhao, Prince Zuko attacks the Commander flees the battle with Uncle Iroh, feeling defeated and betrayed.
Then, in the final scene, we see Ozai’s spiritual advisor tell him of a a rare cosmic event coming soon, the return of Sozin’s Comet. What does this mean? And, to quote Azula, "what’s next?”
