I could wax poetic about the humble mid-length haircut. Actually, I’d even go as far as saying it’s the unsung hero of summer hair trends. Collarbone- to shoulder-length hairstyles are common, but famously underrated. Either you’re in the process of growing out a bob, so reaching mid-length is unavoidable, or it’s simply a quick fix when long hair starts to feel time-consuming.

Thankfully, many celebs (like Emma Stone and Hailey Bieber, to name a few) are on my side in the argument for mid-length supremacy, particularly for those with fine hair. The warmer months call for haircuts that are short enough to feel manageable (read: won't leave the back of your neck dripping in sweat). But equally, fine strands beg for enough length to style with volume in mind. Like a 2-for-1 special, that's when mid-length lobs and layered cuts make the chicest middle-ground option.

Consider the following six styles your guide to the trending mid-length haircuts for summer 2026, and how to tailor them to flatter fine hair.

Invisible layers

Invisible layers are, well, exactly how they sound. While traditional, choppy layering techniques evoke the iconic ‘Rachel’ haircut (which is also a great choice for fine hair), invisible layers are cut internally and seamlessly woven throughout the hair to emulate body from within. Since they’re far less noticeable, they’re perfectly low-maintenance; think salon trips every 8–12 weeks.

"Ask your stylist for long, invisible layers that create movement without making the ends feel thinner," suggests celebrity hairstylist Joe Kelly. "This keeps the hair looking full while giving it that effortless swish—and it’s perfect because you can let it air-dry and it still looks expensive."

The kicktail cut

If you’ve got a keen eye for hair trends, chances are you’ve spotted various ‘90s-inspired “flicky” bobs making a welcome comeback for SS26. If a bob isn’t on the cards for you, consider nailing two trends in one (while preserving a little more length) by opting for the kicktail cut.

Thanks to its signature flipped-out ends, this midi lob is a savior for fine hair as it visually creates the illusion of lift without requiring hours wrestling with a hair dryer and round brush. Instead, five minutes with a straightener will do the trick; create a soft, upturned bend at the ends, spritz on hairspray for hold, et voilà.

Face-framing feathering

Anyone with fine or thin hair will know to avoid weighing the hair down at all costs. Not only can this make it appear even flatter at the roots, but heavy, sticky hair is also hardly the vibe for summer. Enter subtle, face-framing layers, which Kelly explains "instantly make hair feel lighter and more relaxed."

Soft, strategic feathering ensures that “face-framing pieces blend seamlessly into the rest of the haircut.” Kelly adds: "It gives the hair a chic, undone feel whether it’s worn up, down or tucked behind the ears."

Beachy waves

Emulating fullness, volume, and movement is key. Beachy, tousled waves are not only often the go-to for those with naturally textured hair, but they feel synonymous with summer. This look is ideal if you already have some natural waves or curls to lean into, but if not, don’t fret. All you need is five minutes with a large-barreled curling iron, creating effortlessly cascading bends in different directions.

Actually, having fine hair is a pro in this case; it makes the process that much speedier. A silver lining, if we ever saw one...

The side-swept cut

Swoopy, Y2K side parts are one of our favorite nostalgic trends to circle back this season. For those with fine, straight hair with little texture to rely on, cheating maximum volume at the roots is as easy as flipping your parting, according to Melissa Timperley.

The hairstylist told Cosmo "Roots naturally resist being pushed the opposite way, so this instantly creates the lift you need." Timperley also recommended switching your part while your hair is wet to guarantee that it holds.

The classic midi

Philipp Haug, hairstylist and co-founder of Haug London Haus, considers longer bobs which graze the collarbones one of the smartest styles for fine hair. "A lot of women who have longer hair that’s lacking volume like the idea of cutting it to a mid-length, but still want to have softness and femininity in the hair," says Haug. "If you’re worried about your hair looking thin, this length is perfect to hold a bouncy blow-dry and give the illusion of fullness, plus it works on every face shape."

As for day-to-day styling throughout summer, Haug recommends quickly blast-drying hair at the roots, then securing rollers through the top area of the hair to replicate a bouncy blow-dry. "Take them out just before you go out for maximum volume," he suggests.

Sold on a mid-length cut? Me too. Now I just need to decide which I should go for...
