Despite the mythical “unicorn” nickname, the hardest part of a threesome isn't always finding a third person—it's figuring out what everyone is actually supposed to do once things get going. Unlike sex between two people, there's no default position when three bodies are involved. Who touches who? What goes where? Who does what?

Fortunately, a little planning goes a long way. There are plenty of threesome sex positions that help everyone feel included, comfortable, and, most importantly, have a good time.

Before anyone starts getting naked, however, Carol Queen, PhD, staff sexologist at Good Vibes, says it’s important to make sure you're all on the same page about why you're having a threesome in the first place. If you're agreeing to a threesome primarily because your partner wants one—or because it feels like something you should do—it's worth checking in with yourself first. Everyone involved should be genuinely excited to participate.

"Some partners think they want a threesome, but haven't thought about all the potential feelings that could manifest after," says Shani Hart, certified sexuality coach and co-owner of Hart's Desires. Beforehand, discuss expectations, boundaries, safer sex practices, and how you'll handle everything from jealousy to someone deciding they want to stop.

If you're inviting a third person into an existing relationship, remember that they aren't just there to fulfill someone else's fantasy. "People who are thirds in a threesome need their emotional and sexual needs considered," adds sex educator Rebecca Blanton, aka Auntie Vice, co-host of the Fat Chicks on Top podcast. Make sure everyone has equal say in what happens, what doesn't happen, and what they want out of the experience.

Once you've covered the logistics, it's time for the fun part. Ahead, 10 threesome sex positions that help keep everyone involved (and maybe even eager for round two).

The Pleasure Fairy

Three stylized figures in a playful pose, with varying skin tones and bright accessories, on a plain background.

How To Do It: Two people focus on each other while the third acts as the "pleasure fairy." "The third comes over to the two who are focused on each other and adds value via touching, stroking, using sex toys on one, or both. Adding lube when necessary is a fabulous role too!" says Carol Queen, PhD, staff sexologist at Good Vibes.

Pros: This is a great way to ease into a threesome without everyone trying to do everything at once. It's also ideal if someone feels a little overwhelmed or isn't quite ready to be the center of attention.

Cons: If one person stays in the helper role for too long, they may start to feel left out. Make sure everyone gets a chance to receive some attention too.

Switch It Up: Rotate roles every few minutes so everyone has a chance to give, receive, and simply enjoy the moment.

Make It Hotter: "This is also a great position if someone's a little too overwhelmed or not ready to be the center of attention, but also doesn't want to just sit in the corner and watch," says Queen. "In a threesome, there is always something to do."

Mouthing Off

How To Do It: Two people have penetrative sex in a position that leaves some space between their bodies, like Cowgirl or Doggy Style. The third partner kneels between them to add oral stimulation. "Two people fuck (dick or strap-on, whichever) in a position that leaves some room between their bodies," says Carol Queen, PhD, staff sexologist at Good Vibes. "The third person gets their face down in there and helps out by adding oral."

Pros: Everyone gets to participate at once, while the receiving partner gets a little extra attention.

Cons: Space can get a little tight. Take your time getting into position, and don't be afraid to adjust if someone starts feeling squished.

Switch It Up: Queen suggests trying this with positions like Cowgirl or Doggy Style to create enough room for the third partner to comfortably join in.

Make It Hotter: "This is great for someone who likes to do cunnilingus and is happy to get a lick in," says Queen.

The Assist

How To Do It: While two partners make out and have sex, the third sits nearby in a chair and watches while using a sex toy on themselves. "For people who are into cuckold fantasies or if a partner really enjoys voyeurism, this is a great option," says sex educator Rebecca Blanton, aka Auntie Vice, co-host of the Fat Chicks on Top podcast.

Pros: This is a great option for couples exploring voyeurism, cuckolding, or exhibitionism. It also allows the third partner to stay actively involved without everyone needing to be physically connected at once.

Cons: Not everyone enjoys watching more than participating, so make sure everyone is enthusiastic about the dynamic beforehand.

Switch It Up: Instead of simply watching, have the seated partner direct the action by telling the other two what they'd like to see next.

Make It Hotter: Blanton recommends using a wand vibrator with attachments for internal stimulation or penis stroking while you watch.

The Eiffel Tower

Three stylized figures interacting in a playful pose, featuring diverse skin tones and hair colors against a white background.

How To Do It: One partner stands in the middle, giving oral sex to one partner while receiving penetration from the other with a penis or strap-on. Traditionally, the two partners on either side high-five over the middle partner's back—hence the name "Eiffel Tower"—but that's entirely optional.

Pros: No one's left wondering what they're supposed to be doing—everyone gets to join in.

Cons: Fair warning: this one takes a little coordination. Expect a few laughs while everyone figures out where they're supposed to be.

Switch It Up: There's no need to stick to the traditional MMF version. Mix and match bodies, toys, and anatomy to make the position work for your group.

Make It Hotter: Add flavored lube or a tongue vibrator to make oral even more pleasurable. And if the mood strikes? Go ahead and celebrate with the iconic high-five.

The Switch

How To Do It: Have two partners get on all fours facing away from the third partner. The third partner uses plenty of lube to stroke or stimulate one partner with their hands. When that partner has had enough, they call out, "Switch!" and the attention moves to the other partner.

Pros: This playful setup ensures everyone gets a turn while taking the pressure off trying to stimulate multiple people at once. It's also a fun way to break the ice if it's everyone's first threesome together.

Cons: One person will always be waiting for their turn, so check in regularly to make sure everyone still feels included and engaged.

Switch It Up: If everyone's into BDSM, use the same "switch" concept with spanking, flogging, sensation play, or other consensual forms of impact play, letting the receiving partner decide when it's time to rotate.

Make It Hotter: Turn it into a game by having the waiting partner guess how long it'll be before they hear "Switch!" The anticipation can be half the fun.

The Fever Dream

Three stylized figures in a sensual pose with a flower and a fan in an abstract, minimalistic style.

How To Do It: One partner receives penetration from behind while lying on their side with their top leg draped over the giving partner's hip. The third partner lies on their back in front of them, close enough for kissing, oral sex, or manual stimulation.

Pros: Everyone gets to stay connected, and all three partners can easily touch, kiss, or pleasure each other at the same time.

Cons: Getting everyone lined up comfortably may take a few adjustments, so don't be afraid to reposition until it feels right.

Switch It Up: Trade places so each partner has a chance to be in the middle.

Make It Hotter: Add plenty of kissing, dirty talk, or oral stimulation while penetration is happening to keep all three partners engaged.

The Best Kind of Sandwich

Three stylized figures in an intimate arrangement, depicted with vibrant colors and expressive features on a white background.

How To Do It: One partner lies on top of another, either using a vibrating strap-on (or hands and grinding if penetration isn't part of the plan). A third partner kneels behind the top partner to provide penetration with a penis or strap-on. Arrange yourselves in whatever way feels best for your group—there's plenty of room to customize this one.

Pros: This position is incredibly versatile and easy to adapt based on everyone's anatomy, preferences, and comfort levels. It also allows all three partners to stay physically connected at once.

Cons: With three bodies stacked together, it can feel a little cramped. Don't hesitate to pause and adjust everyone's positioning if something feels awkward.

Switch It Up: Swap who takes the middle spot, experiment with different combinations of penetration and grinding, or have the partner in back focus on oral sex instead.

Make It Hotter: Add a bullet vibrator, plenty of lube, or another hands-free toy to increase stimulation without making the position more complicated.

The Double Down

Illustration of two nude figures with blue hair interacting on a stylized background.

How To Do It: One partner with a penis or strap-on lies on their back. One partner straddles them for penetration while the third partner hovers over their face to receive oral sex. The two partners on top can kiss, touch each other, or use their hands to add even more stimulation.

Pros: Everyone gets to participate at the same time, making this a great option for groups who want all three partners actively involved.

Cons: The partner on the bottom has a lot going on at once, so check in often and don't be afraid to slow things down if needed.

Switch It Up: Rotate positions so everyone has a chance to be on top, on the bottom, and experience different sensations.

Make It Hotter: Have the two partners on top kiss, make eye contact, or pleasure each other while the partner underneath enjoys the best seat in the house.

The Daisy Petal

How To Do It: One partner sits at the edge of a bed or sturdy chair with their legs apart while the other two focus on giving oral sex. They can pleasure the receiving partner at the same time or take turns, pausing to kiss and interact with each other between.

Pros: This lets two partners focus entirely on one person's pleasure. It's also easy to rotate so everyone gets a turn.

Cons: With two people working at once, communication is key. Check in often to make sure the receiving partner isn't feeling overstimulated.

Switch It Up: Take turns rotating through the receiving role so everyone gets to experience being the center of attention.

Make It Hotter: Let the two giving partners tease each other with kisses and eye contact while they take turns focusing on the person in the middle.

The Chain Link

How To Do It: One partner sits on the edge of a couch or bed while the second partner gets on all fours in front of them to receive oral sex. The third partner kneels behind the receiving partner and penetrates them with a penis or strap-on.

Pros: Everyone is involved at the same time, and the receiving partner gets simultaneous oral sex and penetration. The seated partner also feels each thrust through their partner, making everyone feel connected.

Cons: Coordinating everyone's height and positioning can take a little trial and error. Pillows or furniture of the right height can make a big difference.

Switch It Up: Rotate positions so everyone gets a chance to sit, receive, and give.

Make It Hotter: Have the seated partner use their hands or a vibrator while giving oral to add even more stimulation.
