Focus on building relationships so people know they can trust you – surprise them with what you can do. Having a mentor is useful – someone in the industry, or a colleague you've worked with in the past (who knows how good you are and can speak up on your behalf). 

If you really feel like you're bashing your head against a wall, join a group of like-minded people – you're more powerful as a team. Head to networking events or go online and talk to other women in your industry or a related industry – learn how they respond to similar problems. It can be a tough environment, so you've got to be tough too.
