KARREN SAYS I've experienced these attitudes too, and the best way to tackle it is head-on. If a colleague or acquaintance prefers dealing with your male colleagues, ask them why. Often people aren't aware of their behaviour until it's flagged up.
Focus on building relationships so people know they can trust you – surprise them with what you can do. Having a mentor is useful – someone in the industry, or a colleague you've worked with in the past (who knows how good you are and can speak up on your behalf).
If you really feel like you're bashing your head against a wall, join a group of like-minded people – you're more powerful as a team. Head to networking events or go online and talk to other women in your industry or a related industry – learn how they respond to similar problems. It can be a tough environment, so you've got to be tough too.
