If you've been glued to the latest episode of Netflix's jaw-dropping Untold series, The Shooting at Hawthorne Hill, you'll know it puts the horrifying case of an Olympic trainer and his student firmly under the microscope. Now, many viewers are left asking the same question: who is his victim, Lauren Kanarek, and what exactly happened to her?

The documentary explores both sides of the twisted tale, examining the events that led to Barisone shooting Kanarek at point-blank range, and the bitter feud that preceded the tragedy.

Here is everything we know about Lauren Kanarek, the events of the shooting, and her quest for justice...

Who is Lauren Kanarek?

Lauren Kanarek is an equestrian and former student of US Olympian Michael Barisone. In the summer of 2019, she was living with her fiancé, Robert Goodwin, on the grounds of Barisone's training centre and farm.

What began as a promising step in her riding career quickly dissolved into a bitter and escalating dispute between the couple and the trainer. Prior to the shooting, Barisone repeatedly called emergency services attempting to label Kanarek and her partner as squatters, claiming they were on his land without permission and ominously describing the situation as "a war" that was "going to be dealt with".

What happened to Lauren Kanarek?

On 7 August 2019, the tension reached a devastating climax. Kanarek was shot twice in a brutal attack by Barisone.

Everyone's clicking on...

Incredibly, she managed to call 911 herself, telling the emergency operator: "I’ve been shot in the heart. Michael Barisone shot me." Her fiancé, Goodwin, could be heard in the background of the terrifying call interacting with the shooter.

The attack left Kanarek fighting for her life. She was placed into a medically induced coma and required extensive surgery to repair the severe damage to her left lung.

Speaking to The Post ahead of the Netflix documentary's release, Kanarek recalled the surreal horror of the attack. "When you’re shot at point-blank range, and bullets just go through you, you’re still walking around," she explained. "The damage is happening, but you’re not feeling it happening."

The trial: What was the verdict?

When Michael Barisone faced trial in the spring of 2022, he was charged with four attempted murder and related weapons offences (including two counts of attempted murder). If found guilty, he faced up to 60 years in prison.

However, the courtroom saw a fierce clash of narratives. Kanarek's legal team portrayed Barisone as a vengeful trainer who was hellbent on destroying her riding career. They pointed to Kanarek's own online posts before the shooting, where she wrote: "I’m being bullied by a 6’3” man. Bullied to the point I’m afraid."

Conversely, Barisone's defence argued that he was driven to a "moment of madness" by Kanarek's allegedly relentless harassment. His team claimed he had no memory of the gun attack and accused Kanarek and Goodwin of physically beating him beforehand. The defence also highlighted a past social media post from Kanarek, reading: "Everyone should be worried. I'm not responsible for anything my other personalities do when they're threatened."

Ultimately, the jury sided with the defence. Barisone was found not guilty by reason of insanity for one count of first-degree attempted murder and one count of weapons possession, and acquitted of the remaining charges.

Where is Lauren Kanarek now?

While the jury's verdict was described as "ecstatic" news for Barisone's legal team, it meant that Barisone walked away without a criminal conviction for the shooting. He was released from prison after serving two and a half years awaiting trial.

Today, Lauren Kanarek is continuing to share her side of the story, as evidenced by her recent interviews surrounding the Netflix release. While she continues her recovery from the physical and emotional trauma of the shooting, she is legally protected from her attacker.

Barisone is currently living under strict court supervision following a stint in psychiatric care. His movements are heavily restricted, and importantly, he is under a strict ban preventing him from making any contact with Kanarek.
