There's just six days until The Crown returns to Netflix and we're next-level excited, if you hadn't already guessed. The fifth season of the hit royal drama kicks off in the early nineties and we'll see everything from the demise of the Royal Family's yacht to Princess Diana's controversial Panorama interview. As well as several scandalous storylines, the season will be packed with re-enactments of iconic royal moments, such as Diana's 'revenge dress' – something which Elizabeth Debicki, who is playing the former Princess of Wales, recently spoke out about.
"When people in my life found out that I was going to play this part, this was the dress that everyone texted me about," Debicki said of recreating the iconic 'revenge dress' moment. "That’s when I started to realise how symbolic this dress is to people."
"It was pressure. It’s a complex dress," the 32-year-old told British Vogue. "I let the fittings happen around me while I thought about what the dress meant. Why this dress? She’d had it for two or three years. It was super risqué at the time."
To recap, on the night of 10 November 20, Diana stepped out at a Vanity Fair party at the Serpentine Gallery in London in the slinky black number, breaking royal protocol by showing her cleavage, shoulders and legs. The Christina Stambolian 'fit was quickly dubbed the 'revenge dress' and became synonymous with the fallout of Charles and Diana's relationship breakdown.
"She was claiming the space," Debicki added of the moment Diana made royal and fashion history. "The way she walked out of that car, the luminosity, the strength of her as that car door opened, she was so fast and so forward."
The Australian actor went on: "It’s an extraordinary thing to watch. To decide what you’re saying about yourself through fashion… it was a currency – an incredibly powerful currency."
