Despite the pandemic, 'tis still the season to be jolly, watch festive films, and exchange gifts - and that's exactly what Kate Middleton and Prince William did as part of their royal train tour this week. Well, the gift giving part, anyway (we cannot vouch for whether they devoured Holidate with a box of Quality Street while travelling from UK city to UK city, sadly).
But back to the gift-giving part. As part of their whirlwind tour of England, Scotland and Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge popped in to meet some students from Cardiff Metropolitan University, where a little elf somewhere had had the festive foresight to plan a good old game of Secret Santa. How fun!
First of all, let's talk about what the actual eff you would do if you picked Kate Middleton's name out of the Santa hat. Buying a gift for a royal?? On a budget?! The stress levels must have been real. Whichever fine student it was who was landed with buying for the future Queen Consort did... well, an interesting job, opting for a Welsh Love Spoon (a decoratively carved wooden spoon that is generally presented as a romantic gift. Fair enough.).
What we all really want to know, though, is what Kate bought for her allocated person. And I have to say, it's an impressive choice. According to royal correspondent Rebecca English, who was travelling with the royals on the brief tour, the Duchess bought Gwennan Lewis a game of Prosecco Pong. Entering the mindset of a student perfectly, that's got to be a 10/10 present ideal for a flat party. Good job Kate.
Prince William was also involved in the Secret Santa, and while he bought his person a finger flick football game (the Prince is a massive fan of football, remember?) he was also treated to a game in return. From his mysterious gift-giver, Prince William received a beer mat flick game. Solid entertainment to recreate a pub environment at home this Christmas, I'd give that an admirable 9/10.
It's actually no surprise that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge aced this Secret Santa; by the sounds of it, the royal family is pretty experienced in the realm of fun gift giving. Every year (except this one, because... COVID), after the family has gathered together at Sandringham on Christmas Eve, they all exchange presents. And apparently they like to give jokey gifts, like the time Kate Middleton once apparently gave Harry a 'grow your own girlfriend'. Lol. To be fair, what do you give someone who's got it all?!
Now, let's just wait for that Prosecco Pong to turn up on Ebay selling for a lot of money. Tuition fees paid for?!
