When Donald Trump was first elected as President back in November 2016, Barack and Michelle Obama were unable to publicly share their thoughts. As the existing President and First Lady, with two months still left in office, pleasantries had to be exchanged on the world stage.
But four years on, things are different. Ahead of the next US election, in which Trump goes head-to-head with Obama's former Vice President Joe Biden (and his powerhouse running mate, Kamala Harris), Michelle Obama is sharing her real thoughts on Donald Trump. And she's not messing around.
Speaking at the virtual Democratic National Convention yesterday, the Becoming author bluntly laid it out, saying: "Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country."
"He had had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head," continued the former First Lady, adding: "He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us."
Urging voters to back the Democrat nominee Joe Biden, Michelle Obama gazed down the camera and said: "If you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can; and they will if we don't make a change in this election."
"If we have any hope of ending this chaos, we have got to vote for Joe Biden like our lives depend on it," she said.
Everyone's clicking on...
The Obamas would always have lent Biden their support, having had him as Barack's right-hand-man when he was President. But the addition of Kamala Harris as running mate has only strengthened that. In a statement following the announcement of Harris' appointment last week, Barack Obama said: "By choosing Senator Kamala Harris as America’s next vice president, [Biden has] underscored his own judgment and character.
"I’ve known Senator Harris for a long time. She is more than prepared for the job. She’s spent her career defending our Constitution and fighting for folks who need a fair shake... This is a good day for our country. Now let’s go win this thing."
The US election will be held on November 3. Biden is currently leading on Trump by several percentage points in the national polls, however Hillary Clinton also had a lead on Donald Trump in polls ahead of the 2016 election, and we know how that one turned out...
